Release notes: the widescreen picture was overlaid onto open matte version to get high quality IMAX shots; the amount of IMAX shots is around 12.5m while open matte shots total around 3m; there are some hardcoded Korean subtitles remains in lower part of some IMAX shots; they were blurred to be less noticeable, but you can always get rid of them just selecting the YAO (yet another overlay); at the end, there are about 11 minutes of IMAX and open matte shots free from any artefacts; Italian subtitles track was corrected and put in sync
YAO subtitles hack: this kind of subtitle overlay black bars on selected shots; it was tested on MPC, VLC, MPV, SMPlayer and should work even on hardware Blu-ray players; to have both black bars and another subtitle, you should use SMPlayer with YAO as first subs track, and the selected language as second subs track
Release format: mkv (BD compliant)

I don't get it. I saw this movie in an IMAX Xenon theater that had a 1.90:1 AR screen, and the whole movie stayed desperately in 2.40 from A to Z, just like "Logan", "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" or "Spider-Man: Homecoming". I hate these stupid LIE MAX movie exploitations! And now you're telling me that there is actually an open-matte version of "Alien Covenant"? Has anybody seen it in IMAX and had a different experience than mine?

Yep, there is an open matte version, with about 12 minutes full (with all the widescreen image, plus top and bottom), and the rest "normal" (cropped on both sides, but with a bit more top and bottom)

AFAIK no, and probably will never be... I'll wait for HDTV version, that probably would be open matte, to get the needed footage without subs.

I am trying to understand what this means. Huh

What is the difference between an "IMAX shot" and an "open matte shot" for this film? And isn't the source of both the Korean version? So why did you name some shots "IMAX" and some "open matte"? Aren't they both opened up?

And what is the difference of those 15.5 combined minutes to the rest of the film? Isn't the rest of it open matte too? If not, what is it? Cropped? OAR with black bars?

I am confused! Big Grin

If it helps any, I saw this at the BFI IMAX in London - about as 'pure' an IMAX experience as it gets. Like Prometheus in IMAX, Covenant was solidly 1.90:1 throughout - not ratio shifting. A consistently open matte transfer will preserve that experience fairly well, though I'm not sure that's what this is...

Now, that's interesting. I saw it in a digital IMAX theater near Paris, France, and it was 2.40:1 from start to finish. I hate when an IMAX theater shows a 2.40:1 movie. What's the point? I don't understand this especially when a 1.90:1 exists and is shown in London. Beauty and the Beast and Sully were both full 1.90:1 in the exact same theater, but not Covenant.

This is interesting, very interesting. About Blu Ray overlay you put on the Korean rip, did you had to move the image up and down to match the open matte background or does the picture is already centered, without the need for further editing?
