[No Longer Available] Die Hard With A Vengeance Regrade (35 Project #2)
(2018-01-28, 01:36 PM)Stamper Wrote: 4 looks great to me. That's the best you can do with the current master. Is there a way you can align and color match the missing top from the old DVD so that the framing is adjusted?

I agree.
Its pretty amazing, the results are far better than I thought possible considering the source.
I think the problem beyond this is how much artifects are introduced when in motion. When your stretching a lossy encode like this it really doesn't like it. It might need a bit of crushing in the blacks to clean it up.
I find cleaning up the Blue channel helps tremendously when doing a regrade. I normally do this when trans coding to a lossless avi.

I can live without the extra few lines of picture information myself. If it was a full open matte then id agree but I don't think the time meets the gain in this case.

Probably, those cut off heads just piss me off. In Beber snaps, you can tell there is more area up there and there was in the original trailers too.

For both of these shots, the feel of it was rather blue, probably mostly because of the cop cars and shirts. However, these blues were quite close to Simon sleeveless shirt we see him wearing from the heist and until the end. And I have pictures of that shirt. I believe that's a good indication as in those pre-digital days, costumes were tested and shot with the actors wearing them before the production of principal photography started so that the director and DP would know how they'd look on film, so it's not unlikely that the blues would look pretty much the same all along.

For this scene, the tunnel in the background where the truck is-- it's supposed to be very much teal.

For this scene, the Simon side felt blue (and I seem to remember that the windows were on the teal side), and the McClane side felt green. None had that late afternoon feel that the red of the current transfer gives to the scene.

The blue letters were very much teal.

All this blue was very much teal.

The "Café" logo on the right was even more purple.

Busy today, so really quick here are the regrade pics based on the one LUT, I'll answer some questions a few hours from now

Looks good. Indeed the Blu-ray was never the film as it was originaly. The only good thing about it was that it ditched the EE and aliasing of the LD master. They basically recreated the whole color timing for video with the DVD remaster/Blu-ray.

Looks better and closer on the screen I have at work than what I saw this morning at home. I'll see tonight on my TV.
However, the "Café" logo was more purple on the official master than it is now, it seems. It has shifted towards blue, but hey, that's a minor issue compared to the vast improvement the rest is.

How does this one would look? The grey suits and cars should turn bluer and, of course, there are the cop cars and shirts that are also in a blue shade there...

Refresh my memory, where is that?

I doubt the previous pictures would all match but if most do, well that's a win. It seems that the one LUT doesn't work as well for the beginning of the movie where I spent a good long time creating 35 LUTs for the first 5 minutes of the film. It really doesn't match anything in the van ride. But as soon as Zues comes in it seems to start matching.

Also interesting, I never noticed the DH3 had a lot of grain. The current color correction hides it a bit but with this cc it shows up significant more. Makes the film look down right grainy.

I was also able to reduce the amount of luma I pulled from the BD to about 40% similar to DH2.
