My God, that looks SO MUCH better! I can't believe it's the same master! How could the professional mastering people have botched a FUBAR job the way they have? That's beyond me.

That's beyond me. Glad you approve, couldn't of gotten anywhere without your pics. To play devil's advocate, if Fox release the movie like this on BD I'm sure a bunch of people would complain about it being revisionist with it's teals, oranges and blues.

Maybe I shoud have taken those pictures more sporadically to cover less scenes but all the way to the end... I don't know. Anyway, it's on the right track. The only thing I worry about is the lighting that changes as the day goes by, since the story takes place in one single day, and that I don't have pictures of the car chase, nor of the bridge-crane-boat sequence until after the explosion. I hope you can get pictures of the last hour from your anonymous US print owner. That's funny and so true that people would complain, as usual. And I was just thinking that, when it's done, from what I'm seeing so far, your work could easily pass as an official remaster. Only people who would compare the framing would notice that it's actually the same master. Apart from that, the color correction, the contrast, the grain that now pops out give the movie an all other look.

Well if I have the time, I should have a small test copy (should I call it a workprint?), ready to go by this weekend so you and anyone else can peruse it. You cancheck the last hour before your memory fades. It seems that most of the work is at the front end so I'm hoping the back end is close to spot on.
Also a small note, just like DH2, DH3 has some seriously inconsistent shots on the BD. Where is goes from one color scheme to another without seemly being a different take. Odd stuff. Thanks given by: Stamper

It seems like they only did them properly on LD for the THX reissues and ever since have done a halfassed job at every revisit using either a mix of old masters or generating new ones with no real effort.
DH3 has suffered for a long time particularly since it's LD master was overdone for 1996 CRTs and slapped onto DVD resulting in one of the all time worst DVD transfers.

PDB, being an American, could you confirm me what McClane says at 1h40'35" after Targo says "Going to arrest me, bunny?"
The English subs I found read: "I think I'm going rest. I'm kind of weak." The French translation says a completely different thing, and since I've reworked the French subs, I'd like to be sure of that line.

He mumbles the lines pretty badly. Here is what I have from the DVD vs the BD: When I listen to it, it sounds like: I don't think I'm going to arrest...but I'm weak. So I'd lean towards the DVD lines being right. Let's see what other people think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ldf3surF2FU

My R2 DVD reads: "I don't think I'm gonna arrest you. I'm gonna fuckin'--"
My RB Blu-ray reads: "I don't think I'm gonna arrest you..." and it doesn't even bother try to understand wha'ts mumbled next. Could it be: "No, I think I'm gonna rest. I'm kinda weak." As if he was playing games with Targo, letting him think he's just gonna lie down 'cause he's exhausted, while he actually had in mind releasing the chain by letting his body weight to release it?

It sounds like don't and arrest to me but it could just as easily be your lines Beber. Problem is his um and ah sound like words. Personally, I lean towards the above DVD: I don't think I'm going to arrest you. I'm kind of weak. Especially since Targo says arrest but either line works in the situation. Very confusing. The script online doesn't help since it such an early draft and radically different. |
