French subtitles provider
#1
Hey, guys.

I've been with you for a few months now, and I realized that I had jumped right ahead into a thread back then to help PDB finding a 20th Century Fox logo for his Die Hard 2 project without even passing through the presentation thread as tradition requires.

So here I am: Beber, from France, near Paris. A movie fan obviously, that has the chance to live near cinemas that still project movies on film, as some of you already know. But what you probably don't know is that I'm a French subtitle maker (from scratch), collector (from TV broadcastings and VOD/replay platforms) and remaker (as I'm never fully satisfied with the job already done). We can't all be editing and color correcting wizards, right? To each their skills.

I don't know how it is in foreign countries, but in France, since the DVD era, many subtitles have been poorly remade for DVDs and then ported onto the Blu-rays of the same movies. Many Universal, MGM, Fox, Paramount, Sony classics (well, my classics from my youth anyway) have low-cost subtitles that the studios have had remade instead of buying the pre-existing files made for the theatrical release since that new digital era that started with the invention of DVD. Indeed, movies such as Alien, Back to the Future, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Carlito's Way, Scarface, the Star Wars sagaThe Usual Suspects, E.T., the Jason Bourne movies, Cape Fear, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Rocky, Robocop, the Die Hard trilogyGhostbusters, the Indiana Jones trilogy, The Abyss, Top Gun and so on have crappy French subtitles ever since the DVDs came out. But some TV channels still use the good ones that were made by competent professionals for the theater release, and I happen to collect as many as I can by recording them when broadcasted or downloading them from Canal+ replay platform to then synchronize them onto my HD video collection. So for those who plan to include French subtitles into their projects, you might want to reach me to get proper ones.

I have some already properly reworked and synchronized with Blu-rays and others are ongoing projects. For instance, I'm in the process of reworking the Jaws subtitles based on a TCM recording and the file that I collected from the recent Arte broadcasting. They're not exactly the same as the Arte is the modernized one also used on the DCP, and the TCM is most likely the true original work. They're both far better than the ones available on the DVDs and Blu-ray anyway.

Oh, and it seems that my issues with EasySUP are history. I just found out why it didn't work like it used to: it just needed to work with avisynth and Java. D'oh!
By the way, any of you guys know how I could add a font into EasySUP? I'd really like to have Futura available in that soft. I have it in my fonts in Windows and yet it doesn't appear in the EasySUP selection.

Hi! Welcome... Smile
Even if you were longer aboard. Smile

Seems as if easySUP is using the installed fonts.. did you already restart easySup (I think so)
Does the font have an alternative name, that could be used? If you check the Font in the Windows Font system with a double click? does istz have a different name, compared to the filename?

No, it's actually called Futura Std Medium but there's no Futura whatsoever available in EasySUP. Bummer! There's a look-alike called "TW Cen Mt", but that's not the real deal. It's like Arial for Helvetica.

Okay.. strange.. I have tried to install it. No Success, but easySUP seems to have grabbed my Fonts at the first start, and now sticks to them. I tried to erase temporary files.. i searched the regiostry.. no luck so far... Sad

Maybe some cryptic key in the registry defines the fonts... or some other temporary files, I don't know where to search.. I deleted EasySUP, and tried to run it freshly.. no luck...

EDIT:
The PRoblem seems to be the font file type itself:
The filetype is OTF, but easySUP seems just work with TTF filetype...

Welcome aboard!

Define "near". You'd need to tell me, like, now, if that's a very "talky" movie. That takes time as I make precise subs. Or maybe it's already done...

I'd just use avs2bdnxml with .ass subtitles made in Aegisub, seems to work flawless for me.

Bienvenue, monsieur! Do you think you could make subtitles for the whole Dollars Trilogy, transcribed by ear?

I'm not refeering to myself, but talking in general. You know, you have offered an interesting service, so I think someone would ask you to help him, sooner or later... probably sooner, IMO! Wink

There are a few soft online which can convert srt into xml so you only have to apply them to you timeline and adjust.

No, my good sir, for The Abyss, they were very poorly made. Many errors, crappy synchronization. The ones on the DVD are definitely not good enough. Visiontext is crap even if it's not the worst I've seen from them. The True Lies ones were total crap, remade by the idiot that supposedly wrote the book about James Cameron they were talking about that night, and the guy is as clueless about subtitling as he is about French grammar, ponctuation and spelling. I pity the proofreader his editor employs. For The Terminator, I left, so I wasn't there to see what they did. I was told that they screened the Blu-ray... and if so they are not that great either even though they are better synchronized. I, myself, have actually remade the ones for both cuts of The Abyss based on the actual originals made by the Dutters for CMC, and I also have rearranged the ones for The Terminator based on the ones from the DVD/Blu-ray for lack of better ones. I've been searching for the originals for years and wonder if they exist at all as the 1st DVD from TF1 didn't even include any apparently.
