yeah it was the R1. The biggest difference I notice is that the bass/backend is raised higher. Sounds punchier than the 2015 BD but not necessarily better

How can I request the CDS mix for the 2015 BD? I own the Jp disc, but it sounds like a pain to sync properly.

Last week i analyzed the DTS audio track of Japanese DVD and the AC3 CDS mix of a 1998 Live Entertainment/Artisan DVD (same mix with 97 copy).

The data is as follows:

R2 Japanese DTS: integrated LUFS level of the mid-channel -20.5 dB, LRA 22.9 dB, and maximum peak level +0.1 dB

Artisan/Live AC3: integrated LUFS of the mid-channel -21 dB, LRA 22.8 dB, maximum peak -0.1 dB

This observation confirmed that the japan Geneon disc does not have a theatrical mix. Even though the LRA is the same, it doesn't seem possible to compensate for the 0.5 dB gain difference between them.

Isn’t it just a difference between DTS and AC3 codecs that accounts for that? We can also assume that the base of those tracks is the original CDS mix, but maybe an adjusted nearfield version for home video, can’t we?

I think Kado is confusing things a bit, the Japan DTS is definetely the original mix of the film and not the revised version. What he probably meant is technically it's slighty different from the Live DVD version, but in the data, not in the mix.

Yeah I've comped both in spectrogram and by ear, they are the same mix. The technical info is different purely because of the codecs.

The mastering quality of the recording is independent of the formats dts or dolby. In the two examples I gave above, different mastering processes were applied. The Artisan/Live copy is about half a decibel more dynamic. And the same goes for most popular titles made in the early to mid-nineties. The center channels of JP 1993, Speed 94 and Stargate 94 Artisan 1999 DVD copy are around -21 dB, they all theatrical version. For those who don't know - 21 to -22 is the most appropriate level for professional THX eqquipped theaters and mixing standards.

I did the analysis with Izotope RX Advanced version.

I’d be curious to see how the AC3 US LaserDisc compares. I’m convinced it sounds better than the 97 DVD.
