My memory is not perfect, but I'm certain the Criterion DVD is faithfull to the 35mm print at least in the scenes taking place in the airfield and the following building with the elevator. These are the orange scenes as seen above. I'd say, without certainty, that Clarice's sweater in the beginning is most likely more faithfull on the Criterion DVD as the greys tend to appear bluer in photochemical color timings.

I find it interesting how the DVD shows more on the sides. I don't get why they didn't simply open the image up to the bottom and top.

I remember paying 60 bucks for that criterion dvd when it was new. wasn't too happy with it when I got a 16x9 tv.

Damn, thanks for that comparison with the 35mm. Unsurprisingly, the 35mm just looks marvelous.

I watched the Image fullscreen laserdisc last night and it is considerably bluer than the Criterion laserdisc.

Does any LD look comparable to the 35mm at all?

Without seeing a 35mm print I couldn't say for sure, those 35mm ebay frames aren't much to work from. All I know is that the Image laserdisc has the 'timed' look with lots of blue whereas the Criterion is more neutral but still with some blue. I think the airport hangar scene was a yellowy-orange on the Image disc. Sounds awesome too. When I get time I'll cap it but it'll have to go to the back of the queue  Wink
