I might have to say, "f*ck it," when it comes to that Japanese 1.85 AR DVD and the reason is it's ridiculous price of $420 or $505 plus shipping. The reason it's so expensive is because there were only 5000 of these ever released and they come with some fancy jacket and other sh*t:

I would be more willing to spend the price of my rent every month on something that can actually be verified. If the AR is in fact 1.85 then I might consider getting it for my birthday or something and maybe actually wear the jacket otherwise I would feel like a fool... regardless of "the cause," LOL Tongue

Either way, it would still be cool to use the BD (2.35 AR)/the "open-matte" 2.0 AR R2 DVD/the "pan&scan" 1.33AR DVD to make an AAP-AR versionWink

I'm wondering if Tylerdurden389 is willing to share his full-screen copy for a project like that. As he pointed out, the color-timing is different depending on the version (which can be seen in the caps-a-holic link I posted) and I read on blu-ray.com that, at times some of the fleshtones have a slightly too pink/red tint to them (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Top-Gun-Blu-ray/475/) so I'm wondering what the "proper" color-timing would actually be for when I attempt to put this together.

I warn you: if you think to use more than two sources to make an AAP-AR version, you are completely insane! Wink

It's very difficult to find two versions with the same AR that perfectly align, both spatially and temporally - just an example I worked with few days ago, Star Wars IV, where I tried to make a PaNup version; PAL DVD is inferior, has different cropping, and a missing frame... think if you have two sources, one probably "semi" open matte, like Terminator 2... you have to find out for each scene the exact placement, not only of the open matte version, but also of the widescreen one, because one is dependent from the other... thinking to do it with three, or worst four different sources, will take you directly to the lunatic asylum! Big Grin - without considering different color grading to match, but that's another story...

P.S. Don't even think to spend $500 for a DVD! Pay your rent, make your daughters a LOT of gifts, but don't throw away your money for a stupid optical disc - said by one who spent a lot of €€€ on a dead format... Smile

I, too, have spent way to much money on films/tv shows/animated stuff in various different formats. It's ridiculous when you think about it, but I rather this be my "habit" versus something like smoking crack, LOL Big Grin

It's just funny to me, because this "method" of taking various aspect ratio sources to make a "whole" picture is an idea I had years ago. Granted, I didn't give it any fancy name or really do much with it, but have always wondered what it would look like to see an entire feature-length film this way. I know that aligning different sources can be hard (sometimes impossible) but it would be interesting to do and "Top Gun" is on that list of films I would like to see this way. It can be a "pet project," something I work on here and there to "kill some time" and slowly progress it forwards. Right now I am learning just how much of a pain in the a** it can be to try to align two different sources to each other but I don't wanna hijack your thread so I will start a new one for thatWink

Sorry, as you can see, the Axis-Aligned Polygon Aspect Ratio™ technique is trademarked... Tongue - but it's free to use for anyone, just put a link to this thread somewhere!

Hope to see a real life example of it soon - Top Gun, or any other... I thought to do one by myself, but I'm lazy... Wink

Sent you a PM Jerry. And yeah, I've seen those caps (had it bookmarked for a while but never got around to buying that disc). I did end up buying it, but only after I decided to buy the older American dvd that has both wide and full screen (double sided disc). I was drunk that night and they were both under 10 bucks each so I said "F*** it" lol.
Now if only Paramount would release the full Harold Faltermeyer score. I can't tell you guys how mad I was when they released a 20th anniv. CD and the only new score cue that was added was...the sad music when Goose dies. Worse yet, a year or 2 before when I got the special edition dvd, I noticed you can hear the flight music in the BTS featurettes. So those master tapes are still out there.
They did this same BS when they did a 20th anniv. release of the Rocky 4 soundtrack. The only new song I think they added was...the sad music when Apollo dies, lol. Thankfully Intrada released Vince's full score for the 25th anniv. and all was right with the world. Now if only they could get the publishing/marketing/whatever rights for this score, I'd easily pay 50 bucks for it. For now we're stuck with low quality rips people made and posted on youtube where all they could really do was remove the center channel to eliminate the voices and most of the sound effects. The jet noise is still there.

Pretty cool!

What inpainting script are you using spoRv?

I have been trying to get inpainting to scale in avisynth for awhile. I have TVIscale in Nuke but keeping it all in AVi would be great.

The avisynth filter is exinpaint; I think it's the best, but could be painfully slow... best use with small parts to paint, like logo or subtitle; should adjust the radius parameter well, because higher is not always better!
