[Released] Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) (Ultimate Edition) | Digital IMAX | 1.90:1
I'm probably overthinking it

The 2.39:1 anamorphic footage will be kept the same and the IMAX footage will probably fit into 16x9?

I'm just not sure because I haven't been able to find details on the specifics.

It seems like, that they are going to change the anamorphic footage by zooming/cropping. Since, that video on Twitter says it will have expanded aspect ratio, and not IMAX scenes in expanded ratio or anything.

It really depends how it was filmed. IMDB lists a variety of stuff, like ARRI Alexa and even GoPro. Some of that might be able to record in a high enough aspect ratio but Im too lazy to research each single one.

For sure it will be 2.39:1 footage kept the same, but the IMAX footage will be shown in full 1.43:1 glory.
And now with the enhanced colour too.

I agree though, trailers cropped for the Twitter/Facebook/SoMe aspect ratio just ruins everything Smile

Logically the 2.39:1 footage will be remastered and kept the same black bars on top and bottom, and the 1.33 remastered IMAX episodes will have black bars on the side. I don't think there's another way to do it.

That's what I'm curious about as well

people are used to home video releases of Nolan's IMAX movies switching between 2.39:1 and 16:9 formatted versions of 1.33 IMAX shots

Because films are largely composed for horizontal compositions (particularly ones at this scale), I think that transition has always been pretty easy to roll with on modern 16x9 displays.

But going between letterboxed 2:39:1 and pillarboxed 1.33:1 on 16x9 displays?  Hmm.... I know LIFE OF PI and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL went back and forth between several different aspect ratios, but they were made with that in mind from the very beginning.

To try to apply that kind of visual shift after-the-fact seems very counter-intuitive.  But I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

It must have been a 2.39:1 shifting to 1.43:1 in film IMAX projections, and 2.39:1 shifting to 1.90:1 in digital IMAX. I don't like the idea to switch from 2.39:1 to 1.43:1 in the home video realm, since nobody has an IMAX screen at home. Plus, as IMAX stands for "image maximum" and not "framing maximum", the Nolan way is a better fit to me, since we all have 16/9 displays at home and the IMAX feeling requires to fill the screen. Having black bars top/bottom, then left/right all the way through would be counterproductive for that feeling. But that would be nice to have the 1.43:1 sequences in a bonus section.

I would love it if they released it with stuff opening up to the full aspect ratio. I watch on a PC so I can just crop it during playback, no problemo, if I want to. But granted, streaming services may not have that option in their apps and on Blu Rays one is constrained by the available standard resolutions.

Have you guys watched the WandaVision, episodes 1, 2, 3, 4 ?

I'm trying to understand what's problem here with shifting of the aspect ratio...

Everything works as intended, we as consumers can't ask for more.
