Apocalypse Now: Final Cut 40th Anniversary & Restoration
#21
I remember now.

I bought the two original DVDs, NTSC and Pal + a rip of the Laserdisc, because I wanted to reconstitute the original 70mm with the proper ending.

LD was to be an additional track in sync.

There is a problem with the version with credit on the Blu-ray, the credits do not appear in sync, sometimes they are unreadeable.

According to Web, it was on 35mm.

Apocalypse Now: The Original 70mm Engagements
https://www.in70mm.com/library/engagemen.../index.htm
In mid-October, 1979, the film was put into a nationwide, 35mm general release where it played in hundreds of cinemas across the United States and Canada and, eventually, the rest of the world. The 35mm version of the film was different from the 70mm version in a number of respects.

Aside from obvious visual and sonic differences, the 35mm version, whether Dolby Stereo or mono, featured a completely different audio mix, providing a less dynamic, less immersive experience than was provided by the 70mm version and, most notably, featured an end-credit sequence which included footage of the Kurtz compound and its destruction not seen in the original 70mm presentations.

A Face of War (1968) Documentary film by Eugene S. Jones

Francis Ford Coppola 'Apocalypse Now'
"I would like to say where this movie came from," said Coppola. "I saw Eugene Jones' 1967 A Face of War, a 16 mm documentary about Vietnam, and that had a profound effect on me."

VHSRip 1.7GB @ https://archive.org/details/AFaceOfWar

Was never released on DVD.

The directorial debut of documentary filmmaker Eugene S. Jones (a veteran television cameraman who fought with the Marines during World War II), A Face of War is a feature-length account of a single day's activities of a group of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam. Jones follows the 7th Marine Regiment from dusk to dawn, with occasional pauses for reflective interviews. These scenes are placed in perspective with footage of other war zones in Southeast Asia. Before the film is over, some of the participants are killed, and several others -- including two of the film crew -- are wounded.

A Face of War was honored with the Special Award for Feature-Length Documentary at the 1969 National Society of Film Critics Awards.

“heart-wrenching masterpiece” - Roger Ebert

Would be great if it can be restored and released as bonus on new BD.

Here's a snippet from an interview from 2001 with Stephen Burum (who shot the compound destruction)

Pizzello: Let’s talk a bit about the explosion of the Kurtz compound, which was only shown over the end credits of the initial 35mm release prints. That footage never appeared in the 70mm prints, and Mr. Coppola has acknowledged that its inclusion in the 35mm credits caused some confusion about the film’s ending.

Burum: Everybody tried to make a big deal out of that footage, but the only reason Francis included it in the 35mm prints was because Joe Lombardi got really upset when it was removed from the original cut. Francis arranged this work-in-progress screening for the cast and crew at the Bruin Theater in Westwood, and when it was over, Joe grabbed Francis in the lobby and jumped all over him: “Damnit, I had my effects guys all over the jungle to shoot that scene!” So in order to placate Joe, Francis put the footage over the credits, which led to all of this speculation about the film’s ending.

Endings:
the end credits rolling over surrealistic explosions.
the end credits rolling over a simple black background and a slightly altered musical score.

Preserving Destruction:
Now for new BD, films is listed with full running time - maybe with end credits - musical score, or it's only mistake.

Over Spleen is LD with end credits over a black background - PCM.

Using highest audio quality and just put it over footage with credits from BD.
+ OG audio from DVD
[wiki] and it was included in the 1980s LaserDisc release. - Only Analog audio.

V2; removed credits using DVD or something else...

I'm afraid that the poster captures using RCA cables, which is less than ideal; consequently, I decided that syncing the PCM wasn't worth the effort.

We have LD PCM bit perfect capture.
But I don't know does it have end credits over black background with musical score.

Just to say I have the Laserdisc audio for Apocalypse Now & One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest captured if anyone is able to sync them (beyond my abilities I'm afraid)

DoomBot:
What's the LD reference numbers and are they bit perfect captures. Send me a pm if you'd like alexpeden2000

schorman:
They are bit perfect. I did the captures for alexpeden2000. I still have the discs and can post info later.

Apocalypse Now Laserdisc: PCM sync to BD
This is in the process of being done.

The end explosions credits need to be redone with the credit layered out in sync.

They are out of sync on the Blu-ray, the only way to do it is use the initial DVD release and sync it by visual and sound judgment.

Just got back from it: I noticed 2 scenes removed from Redux. That would be the guys joining the Bunnies to f**** them, and the one near the end, when Kurtz reads a Time Magazine (I think) article to a captive Willard in a metal container kind of jail-cell. There might be other differences, but if so, I did not notice them.

EDIT: and I just noticed the UHD just dropped today.
