And slightly zoomed, getting a bit fed up with alot of these new 4k masters losing image on the sides and in this case top and bottom as well. The bluray of V the mini series suffers the same zooming problem compared to the dvd as this (not to mention the other argument of whether it should be 4/3 or 16/9).

Dammit! Well Warner are specialists for that crap.

They zoombox 1.85:1 films instead of open matting them.

Were the old Blu-ray zoomboxed too?

Shining is documented by the hand of Kubrick as 1.85:1

Anyone know how well the LD mono syncs up with the UHD...is there much work required?

@Johnno There are frame differences throughout the movie, so if you just tried remuxing it without editing it would probably go in and out of sync. Around reel changes are 4-5 frame differences, plus a few shots here and there are +/- a frame.

I finished syncing side 1 today, so I'm making good progress. I haven't noticed any new sound effects in the 5.1 mix, but I did notice they went a little crazy with the de-clicker. A lot of small mouth sounds, foley, and even the beginning of some dialogue has been removed, so the mono dialogue sounds much stronger in comparison.

ah nuts...I don't think I'll have the paitence (or skill) required to sync them up. Big Grin
Glad the 5.1 isn't too wildly different from the mono in this case.

Now that I have it mostly synced up, here is a spectrum comparison between LD and UHD. There is definitely noise reduction on the UHD, you can even see the darker lines throughout where they tried to mask out frequencies. The interesting thing is the large spikes on the UHD that stick out from the rest of the movie. I've seen this kind of thing before on remixes and always leaves me scratching my head how it ended up that way. This time though I think the answer is actually pretty obvious after checking out the spots: they laid in a new ringing sound on top of the mix to make the "shining" sound more intense when something weird is going on.

I'm officially over the hump on the sync, hopefully won't be too much longer now. Here's a quick example of a scene that jumped out at me when listening back to back. It's when shit really starts to hit the fan after Wendy suggests leaving the hotel. Some of the scenes have some serious bass synth that is almost overwhelming the dialogue at times. As you can see the UHD completely misses that..
