LIST of fake 4k releases
#1
Have you guys seen this list on 4kmedia.org ? https://4kmedia.org/real-or-fake-4k/

Quote:Real Or Fake 4K
Complete list of Ultra-HD Blu-ray films and TV series, and whether they are real 4K (native 2160p) or fake 4k (mastered in 2K or 1080p then upscaled). Keep in mind, age has nothing to do with quality, classics shot on 35mm such as Independence Day, Lawrence of Arabia and Ghostbusters can have the original negative film scanned at up to 6K.
AKA thxita on OriginalTrilogy
I preserve movies as they first appeared in Italy.

General rule of thumb, most current movies and animated titles are shot and finished digitally at aprox 2.5k. Some have the on location and studio set footage shot in 4k but usually the CG FX sequences and digital touch up work done at 2.8k, due to the high costs and longer times of rendering native 4k CG stuff and finishing all that entirely in 4k. Now there are exceptions, with some big budget productions and recent Disney productions such as Toy Story 4 being entirely not only shot/rendered, but all finished in 4k. Generally, most productions that don't have high budget with a lot of backing and guaranteed box office revenue, will be primarily shot and finished lower than 4k. Now there is the option of re-rendering all the digitally shot footage + CG VFX to 4k if the FX elements files still exist and run on the editing software currently used, but this method is very time consuming almost to the point of rebuilding the film from scratch and adds extremely high costs the studio or producers outright state is completely unnecessary. The easiest and cheapest method is upscaling the uncompressed 2.xk master for a 4k presentation and depending on how the conversion and WCG were done, will still look fine to most eyes.

Now with titles that had footage shot 35mm but also contained CG VFX and digital touch-ups, those with a few exceptions are usually finished at and locked to 2k. Sometimes they'll do a 4k rebuild and re-render if it has minimal CG VFX and digital enhancements ala Casino Royale, but this way is also considered very expensive and time consuming and depending on the source, doesn't yield much of a drastic difference.
