Chose this frame because the open matte has a dropout...

others will follow, but now it's time to sleep...

DVD luckily is completely in sync with D-Theater; now I gotta find the way to fix the missing frames in the open matte version!

Don't know if this helps, but you guys realize that there are TWO different "open matte" versions out there. The second one I'm referring to is an 8.82GB 1080i Russian HDTV version. It's in PAL (of course) and only contains a Russian audio track, plus it has a logo in the upper-right hand part of screen, but maybe this could help. it's available over on rutracker...

Here are the three screenshots that are posted there:

I'm happy to help out by downloading this version and doing comparison screenshots between the two "open-matte" copies if there is any interestWink

EDIT: the "dropout" in the open-matte version, IMHO appears to be film damage in that frame. If you look very carefully, it appears to be DNR'ed in the OAR copy but is still slightly visible.

EDIT2: Here's a quick screenshot comparison between the two "open-matte" versions:

It looks like the Russian HDTV copy has a slight pink blanket tint applied to itSad

Where is the non-logo'd open matte version from? Mine is from Cinemax like the Abyss. I'm curious to see if my version has the drop-out also (I assume it does). What is the time frame on the drop-out?

I'm still all for the open matte over the oar.

I have a logo free old 720p open matte version with no dropout.
Tell me if you want me to upload it to you somewhere, so that you can pick and repair any missing frames in the new one.

In the jets picture you posted, the right corner isn't a drop out it's the flames from another jet engine next to it.

The "drop-out" that I was referring to in that screenshot is not the flames but the black "spot" in the white smoke-trail (next to the jet wing, also towards right-bottom corner) that appears to have been DNR'ed for the OAR version.

Not sure what Andrea was referring to though...

That's great Stamper! Yes, please, upload it somewhere; it will be perfect to repair those corrupted frames, and as replacement for the missing ones; thanks a lot in advance!!!

Jerry, you are right; I was referring to that greenish... slime? splotch? that one! Big Grin

Since Stamper wrote that the image doesn't contain a drop-out, but that those are flames (when Andrea was referring to that "spot"/"slime"/"splotch") whether his 720p open-matte copy might be sourced from the same 1080 copy that you already have.

Also, I know how Andrea likes to layer different sources to "average" them out and get better quality, which is why I suggested the "other" 1080 HDTV copy (the Russian one with the logo) If the 720p copy that Stamper has is sourced from the 1080, then it would contain the same "damaged"/missing frames, which could possibly be salvaged from the Russian HDTV source. Also, wouldn't it be better to use a 1080 source versus an upscaled 720p source?

We must find out if the 720p is a simple downconversion, or an original HDTV recording, using the same master; in the first case, it should contain the same corrupted frames, so it will be useless; in the second case, it will be useful to recover those corrupted/missing frames.

About using two 1080 versions; not a bad idea, but as you can see, the 1080 version with logo has less details than the 1080 without logo - that probably is sourced from Cinemax, as PDB wrote before, but I'm not sure about that... so, using that will probably wipe out some noise, but also reduce the details... and consider also that it should be resized to align spatially, losing even more detail...

Using an upscaled 720p usually will not improve the quality, but... (there is always a "but", you know...)
If the 720p is a direct downconversion made by the studio/broadcast/whoever, using pro level software/hardware, it *could* be, in theory, possible, using Super Resolution, to squeeze out more details than using a "simple" resize filter; given that, it's difficult to think that even a 720p -> SR upscaled to 1080p will contain more details than the 1080p version, but I'm still curious to test it, nevertheless!

I'm sure you are very curiousTongue

I understand what you are saying and it makes sense; the only reason I suggested it is if it's the "only" source to "recover" those damaged/missing frames then it might be useful. As far as SuperResolution is concerned, this is an amazing technique and I have seen the "miracles" it can achieve with some personal tests I have done using it. And, as you know, if you apply REAL 35mm grain on top of the SuperResolution'ed footage, this will help "mask" that it's from a lower resolution copy and improve the perceived qualityWink
