Something Evil (1972)

Warning: if you want to make a BD compliant, apart the (obvious) fact that you should add black borders on both sides to reach 1280x720, you should use the 24fps - not a real problem but, if you are working with 23.976fps in mind, at least you have enough time to eventually fix it! Wink

Why 24fps? I have never had any problems with 720p 23.976fps playing properly on a BD...

And, yes, you're right that it will have to be pillar-boxedWink

Well, *it seems* BD compliant frame rates at 720p are only 24, 50 and 60fps...

Yeah, I see what you are saying and NOT arguing that this is the "official" compliant frame rate... weird that I have not had problems playing 23.976fps on a BD when only using 720p (this is true on my stand-alone BDplayer and on my PS3) Regardless, I'm not sure if the release will be big enough for a BD-25 and I might release the project as an AVCHD9... I guess I have some more tests ahead of me once the video is assembled. At least I'm working on all of it in lossless format so making a "final" decision will be easyWink

Well, AVCHD format *seems* not allow 720p 23.976fps...

Hmmmm... granted, this is from wikipedia (which you have to take with a grain of salt...) but:

Same page, few lines before: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD#Progr...scan_video
so, 23.976fps or 24fps?!?

If you read it carefully, it says that it supported 720p/24fps from the beginning... however under the specs, there is no mention of 24fps AT ALL... this is weirdTongue

So, of course, this project is taking longer to put together than I wanted Tongue

I discovered something interesting about the Finnish TV source... it's from the exact same master as the "Horror" capture, which is indicated by nearly perfect matching timing (there are a couple of instances around commercials where some black frames are missing, and after one commercial there is about 35 frames missing) and they have very similar colors [well mostly but, there are instances where the "horror" source looks a little de-saturated compared to the Finnish tv source], the exact same film scratches present, etc. This is wonderful BUT... there always is a "butt," LOL....

The source I have has already been de-interlaced, which normally would be fine but... well, it turns out that just like the "horror" source, this one also has a problem of the field order switching after ~56 minutes and it happens at the exact same spot. What this means, is that there is some very nasty combing and field blending going on for the last few minutes of the film which can't really be fixed. As far as using that last few minutes for an overlay, there are some frames that are still ok, and there are certain frames where I would have to use only partial frames for the overlay (where there is still a benefit in using parts of the frame to help bring more detail out, but this will take extra time to "cherry-pick" the right frames/parts of frames.)

The real problem that I have here is what the hell am I to do with the "horror" logo that I wanted to patch. The first ~56 minutes will be flawless/seamless (or nearly), but for those last few minutes (the PAL runtime is ~71 minutes and that's how I'm working on it for now and will slow down to 23.976fps once I have everything else done) there will be times where it will be pretty obvious that the logo has been patched... So... should I say "screw it" and just leave the "horror" logo in-tact altogether OR do the best that I can with the sources I have and "warn" people that the result, although will be the highest quality available to-date, will NOT be perfect?

I already hear some of you asking, "what about the other sources?" and I have an answer for that...

- The french tv source is absolutely useless, colors are very dull, whites blown out, green tint to print, spatial/temporal alignment is non-existent that I can't use it as a "patch" anywhere

- the us tv broadcast (which is the vhsrip that has been floating around for years) does not align temporally and has little to no detail, plus it's at 29.97fps (which I tried to IVTC and then sped up to 25fps[to keep things consistent with other sources] but the temporal alignment wasn't there)

- the german tv broadcast does not align spatially at all, and appears to have a slight pincushion effect which makes it a pain to match, plus it doesn't align temporally either. the best that I can hope for this source, is to use it as a color reference as they are more vivid on this version

I'm pretty sure there is some magic filter for Avisynth that could fix the bad interlaced part...
At least, if you can't properly restore it, I'd prefer to have a bad interlaced patch to wipe out the logo, instead the logo itself... another solution could be to blur somehow that bad interlaced patch parts...
