[In progress] Resident Evil saga AAP-AR & color regrade
#1
(continue from this thread: https://fanrestore.com/thread-1627.html)

I thought that a "mere" open matte edition is too easy... Big Grin so it's time for an AAP-AR treatment, and eventual color regrade.

Resident Evil

Aspect ratio: AAP-AR 1.78:1 + 1.33:1 — using 1.78:1 OM BD and 1.33:1 FS various sources - one DTV which is quite similar, color wise, to BD, another a bit different, and the DVD which is quite different, in particular the contrast
Color grading: untouched (for the moment)
Audio & sub tracks: BD
Progress: video almost ready

Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Aspect ratio: AAP-AR 1.78:1 + 1.33:1 (+ 2.35:1, to be tested) — sadly the 1.78:1 OM BD has inherent problems that can't be solved, so an HDTV version would be used instead, using a second source to wipe out logo and eventually the OM DVD; 1.33:1 FS DVD; 2.35:1 OAR BD
Color grading: untouched (for the moment)
Audio & sub tracks: BD
Progress: preliminary test

open matte VS AAP-AR of previous images: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/129953

Resident Evil: Extinction

Aspect ratio: AAP-AR 2.35:1 + 1.78:1 — 2.35:1 BD, 1.78:1 OM HDTV - 1.33:1 seems to have no further image
Color grading: DVD, probably "gritty" contrast
Audio & sub tracks: BD
Progress: advanced test, need another source to get rid of the logo

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Aspect ratio: AAP-AR 2.35:1 + 1.78:1 — 2.35:1 BD, 1.78:1 OM WEB & HDTV - 1.33:1 seems to have no further image
Color grading: BD regraded — magenta blanket removed & "gritty contrast"
Audio & sub tracks: BD
Progress: video ready
Note: only few minutes are available in OM, so the movie would be mainly OAR; still hope to find out an HDTV recording with the first five minutes OM

Resident Evil: Retribution

Aspect ratio: AAP-AR 2.35:1 + 1.78:1 — 2.35:1 BD, 1.78:1 OM WEB & HDTV - 1.33:1 seems to have no further image
Color grading: untouched (for the moment)
Audio & sub tracks: BD
Progress: preliminary test

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Aspect ratio: OAR 2.35:1 — 2.35:1 BD
Color grading: regraded using camrips as inspiration, "gritty" contrast
Audio & sub tracks: BD
Progress: preliminary test

Note: although this was release in IMAX, I have not found an OM source (yet); *maybe* an HDTV broadcasting could use this ratio

Anyone ever compared the PAL 6.1 DTS-ES DVD track of the first Resident Evil to the BD track?

Still fighting with RE1... if I will release it, one day, I've thought to get a compromise, as it's impossible to get a perfect 100% between SDTV and BD; so, it would be something like 99% that, when overlaid using both sources near the borders, and with a grain plate over it, the eventual tiny differences here and there *should* pass unnoticed - I strongly hope so! Big Grin

I want to thank babouin, who gave me RE4 open matte shots from WEB-DL, and RE5 HDTV - which I hope will be useful to get a better quality, merging it with the WEB-DL.

Also, a big thank to OperatorIV, who gave me RE2, RE3, RE4 HDTV; RE2 and RE3 would be used to get rid of the TV logos, while RE4 may be useful to improve quality of the open matte shots - sadly even in this recording, the first minutes are not open matte... I wonder if someone, one day, would be able to grab that version!

spoRv, check out my new post in AutoAlign discussion: https://fanrestore.com/thread-1974-post-...l#pid41207

Might or might not help a little with your project.

Me personally, I ended up rendering the one that was 99% perfect, then going through the whole thing and fixing all the shots that didn't fit. Blanket solution doesn't seem to exist yet (I didn't try with my new trick though, that came later). Sometimes it needed a positive gamma correction >1, other times negative <1, meh ... I think I'm through now, tho. Big Grin

Thanks to a member on rutracker, I have now a third DTV recording - and I managed to find out a fourth one, albeit quality is meh... this will help to fill the gaps with an higher quality source, and probably improve overall quality using average; take a look at before/after (using TOOT, that has almost the same quality of median, but it does not take in account logo in this specific case): http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/132448

Just finished to refine RE1; I watched it all WITHOUT these final touches, and it was almost perfect, apart very few shots (that I was aware of), where the blending is barely noticeable; but, after adding the grain plate, those *should* be unnoticeable.

I saw one of the RE films on TV the other day and it made me remember this project. Is it dead spoRv or still on the back-burner?

I was curious to see the first two film in 1.33 HD and the later films in 1.77

As the zombies in the film, this project is undead = not alive, but not dead! Happy

I promised myself to get back to this ASAP, as first film is practically finished.

Hey spoRv,

I was wondering if you have any updates on the franchise. I've been following these threads for years now.
Do you think there will be a release of your versions any time soon?

A lot of things in personal life happened lately, so I was not following my projects as much as I wanted.

But now it seems I got some time, so *maybe* I could start to release half-made projects - not a promise, but just an intention! Big Grin
