How to tone map PGS subtitles?

So guys, anybody knows how to HDR tone map subtitles in pgs? Usual SDR tone mapped subtitles do look a little too bright if you drop them onto the UHD as is. More than that, they sometimes even affect the overall brightness of the image - when they appear on screen, the brightness drops a little (I guess to compensate for the overtly bright subtitles) and then they go off screen it gets back to normal. So is there a way to HDR tone map them and get rid of this problem?

Sorry, didn't notice your comment. Actually, I found the solution in toying with luminance. Subs should look grey in SDr mode in order to look (not overly) white in HDR/DV mode.

Hello,
as my mind was slowly unraveling trying to adapt subtitles colors taken from an HDR movie, I came upon this thread, which describes a way to do the exact opposite.

I have tried everything humanly possible, but the only thing I found that worked was to convert the subtitles to PNG using BDSup2Sub and than modify the colors using Photoshop elements, unfortunately there is no way to use the batch function to do this, as it would loose the transparent layer, so I would have to do this manually for each individual subtitle.

So, before I loose the will to live, does anyone know if there's any way to use "Subtitle tonemap" to do this?

If not, is there some method to do this?

Having recently bought a UHD OLED TV, I'm now in the HDR realm, too, and I encountered the same problem with overly bright white subtitles. My solution is to use .ass files and convert them into .sup with Bronan's tool here:

Before feeding the .ass to Bronan's tool, I just open the .ass file in Notepad and paste my following line of styles (this one is for Jaws for example, which is a 2.35:1 AR). The part I put in bold is the shade of gray I use instead of true white that burns your eyes when displayed in HDR. Changing that to that kind of gray turns it back to a decent white when displayed in HDR:

Style: Default,Arial,16,&H00A0A0A0,&H00000000,&H00000000,&H00000000,0,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,0,3,2,15,15,43,0

I make them. It's quite easy. First I download the subtitles, or rip them from the Blu-ray, or create them from scratch (as I am a subtitler), in .srt format, then I use the oldfashionned Subtitle Workshop to convert the .srt into .ass. By default, you obtain a line of styles that is quite ugly, so I change it in Notepad, and then I feed that .ass file to Bronan's tool.
