BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: WORK IN PROGRESS (1991)
#21
The best version of Beauty and the Beast: WIP is the 35mm scan provided on the Diamond Edition Blu-ray, but it needs to be ripped in order to watch it in full screen.

This is the only one I haven't yet checked because I was so peeved about the changes to BATB on Blu-ray that I didn't ever buy it. The picture looks terribly revisionist even without getting to the redrawn stuff etc. However, I do have:

1. Multiple copies of the US LaserDisc release
2. The version from the US special edition DVD
3. The version from the UK special edition DVD

Incredibly, they're all different transfers. The LD is tidied up to add dissolves etc. and the colours are very different from the UK DVD version (if anything the UK DVD version is almost certainly the original in this respect because the colours are a lot less sophisticated, e.g. the castle just looks mostly like a blue wash rather than everything being individually painted in various different colours). The US DVD has colours similar to the LD but the logo from the UK DVD. Neither DVD has the dissolves, they both jump abruptly at cuts where there are intended to (eventually) be dissolves.

When you say "best", what exactly are you basing that on? So far, from all I've seen, it looks like the UK DVD is probably the most true to the original festival screening in most respects except that they've cranked the crap out of the contrast so all the tactile texture is blown out and so on. But the one that appears to look the "best" from a subjective standpoint is the LaserDisc, which makes some sense to me because of how it came to be (as discussed previously in this thread). My guess would've been that the Blu-ray version is probably just the NTSC DVD version (or maybe the PAL DVD one, I suppose) rather than a whole new transfer, but maybe it is unique as well. If so, then there are 4 different transfers of this in the wild!

Interesting that the UK DVD has a different look than the US DVD (both are the DVDs that were released in 2002?). Anyway from what I know, the US DVD has seamless branching, so the colored parts are the same as the final transfer of the movie's. Perhaps the UK DVD has a scan like the Blu-ray did.

Anyway here are some screenshots from the Blu-ray (I only took colored ones):

Yep, that's definitely what the UK DVD looks like, see screenshots I shared previously in the thread. Interesting! Thanks.

I'm confused because:

.. doesn't look like that on the Blu-ray version of WIP. The UK PAL screenshots look more like a cleaned up modern version seamlessly branched in.

Here's the Diamond BD WIP version:

But yeah managed to rip it from the Blu. Was a pain in the ass! The WiP is split into segments because it plays along with the remastered Theatrical Cut which itself is seamless branching with the Extended Cut. And since its a PiP feature, I had to separate out the stream from the theatrical M2TS files and mux to new files before joining the whole thing together ergh.

EDIT: Just re-read your comment and I think you were just agreeing with farerb that the "colored parts" on the UK DVD look like the "final transfer of the movie"?

I'd love to check out that WIP version from the Diamond Blu! I had no idea such a thing was ever included and officially released.
