I'm talking about separate surround processors, not AVRs. The Yamaha isn't an AVR, all it does is split the 2 channels into 4 using Dolby Pro Logic circuitry.
No, I know, what you're talking about I was just contemplating alternative solutions to get the Pro Logic decoder out of the older AVR and use it as a separate sound processor of sort.

I mean I guess but why not just buy a surround processor that's actually intended as a surround processor instead of daisy-chaining AVRs? I wouldn't think that'd be a good solution.

#1: a Yamaha DSR-70PRO Pro Logic decoder intended for use in consumer home video chains (analogue stereo input, analogue L+R+C+S output)
#2: a Dolby SDU4 decoder intended for use in studio applications (the same one that it seems both @TomArrow and @spoRv have)

Albeit stand-alone Dolby Pro Logic decoders exist (maybe DPL II too), problems are: - AFAIK there are no DPL IIx nor IIz decoders
- there are very few SRS Circle Surround II decoders (if any)
- AFAIK there are no DTS Neo:6 decoders
so, using an old AVR as surround decoder - at least one that has DPL IIx or IIz and/or CS II and/or DTS Neo:6 - is not that a bad idea; main thing would be a quite huge power consumption in comparison to a stand-alone decoder (unless a class D AVR is used)

In theory an AVR used in pass-through mode only shouldn't use a lot of power, if there are no speakers connected the amplifier shouldn't be under any load, admittedly it's not an ideal solution (and would be very bulky) but it's better than nothing. Sometimes I think about getting a hold of one of the stonking high-end AVRs from the DVD years now that they're 'obsolete'. Okay I would lose DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD but would I even notice? TBH my AVR is more than enough but there is nothing quite like good amplification.
The alternative I guess would be to software decode your 2.0 and encode to 5.1, that should force your Amos receiver to use those channels only and not throw sounds around willy-nilly

Well, if you are not interested in Dolby Atmos and DTS-X (or Auro 3D), there are plenty of AVRs with both TrueHD/DTS-HD MA and DPL II-something and DTS Neo:6 - less with also CS II, but still some.
