Sorry the only reason I asked is he told me to do just that I just assumed he would have at least said tomorrow something that’s all. didn’t mean to get so pushy just thought it was odd that’s all. Also big fan of Highlander I hope that not only Highlander 1 but 3 and endgame get uhd blu rays one day and are the definitive cuts of the movies. I wish there was a way to enjoy Highlander the raven with it having a better ending than it got with season 2.

fanres is a nice comfortable slow moving community, perhaps in contrast to a lot of the internet. Like the ents in Lord of the Rings. We take our time, even if it takes days, weeks, months or years, but we get things done. Well, usually. Big Grin Just lean back and enjoy the slow pace.

Your high praise of the uncompressed trailer made me want to see it so bad. why do sites like YouTube and streaming services not made true improvements to hd and higher resolutions compression. Sad

Quote:Shows like Buffy and I think seasons 1 and 2 of angel would beg to differ when it comes to 16:9 you can see crew members you weren’t meant to see etc.

That's a reality for all shows. Like with the Wire, where they had to touch up, either erasing with CGI, or reframe many shots, for it to work, you have to re-adapt the negs to current standarts. The producer of the Wire invested hundred of hours doing this, but he knew that was the condition for his show making money for the next three or five decades. And it worked. The show is all over the place now, which would never have happened if they kept it 4/3.

It's like for Friends, no one except hardcore fans who want the full extended episodes that appeared only on DVD will watch them on 4/3 DVD now, general audiences watch Friends in 16/9 Blu-ray or streaming.

STTNG of course still gets to stream on Netflix and other, but that is due to the power of the franchise name. If they invested in widescreening it, as originaly intended, it would boost the viewership to no end. Even those "purists" on the Blu forum would buy the sets again just to see the different experience and improved CGI.

That’s why both 4:3 and 16:9 should be options dvd blu ray etc.

Has there ever been a retail release that uses PGS subs to add matte lines? It'd be an easy way to have both on one disc. I know its possible because I've seen fan projects do it, and it works quite well. Would be a neat feature to see in some releases.

Unfortunately that would not work due to what the Blu Ray specification allows in terms of resolution and aspect ratio. If you want 4:3 on a Blu ray, you have to add black bars left and right to have an image that can be encoded as 16:9. Adding additional black bars to get a cropped 16:9 image would then result in a tiny 16:9 image with black borders on all sides. The whole reason normal consumers like 16:9 is because it fills up their screen, I presume. Or maybe it's due to years of "Widescreen" propaganda making people subjectively "feel" like they have more image when something is "wider". (Remember those ads where the image "opens up" to the sides?)

It's probably the latter because if not filling up the screen was a problem for people, they wouldn't like 2,40:1 Blu Rays with black bars either. And if you do the math, you'll notice a 2,40:1 Blu Ray actually has slightly more black space than a 4:3 Blu Ray in terms of actual pixel counts.

The only time this method works is for an Open Matte where the open matte is 16:9 already and you're cropping to something like 2.40:1. Or if you are doing a release that does not need to accommodate Blu Ray standards. I certainly wish the industry would introduce some kind of variable AR standard. Certainly a crop & resize chip could likely be easily mass produced for cheap. Just save a 1:1 image in 1920x1920 (or 3840*3840) and then crop whatever you want from that. Would be awesome. Not gonna happen though, I think big corporations see consumers as nothing more than useful bug people, not as someone worth putting effort and love into a product for.

You can't have the option of black bars subs if every shot is reframed and had some CGI trick to erase stuff in the widescreened version.

They have to be separate releases, but in most cases, like Friends or X-Files, there's only one release and it's the widescreen one.

Lost In Space, curiously, is widescreen on season 1 DVD remaster, but the Blu-ray remaster version was 4/3. I'm guessing they did a poll and it ended up that older fans want it square.

You could scan the entire negative 35mm frame in principle, apply all the grading/VFX to that and then use that as the master from which to create "croppings". But would potentially create more work for portions that would be used neither in the 4:3 nor in the 16:9 versions.

Basically my idea would be to have Blu Rays be like 35mm film prints were (well, like the super35 frame to be fair, without the audio) and then the "projectionist" (remote control of your blu ray player) chooses the framing.

That’s the best way that way you get whatever aspect ratio you like.

Apologies for not being very active here over the weekend; was pretty busy and wasn't able to get much time at my desktop.
Program material is recorded on the other side of this disc...

It happens on some TV movies like Irvin Allen productions, but there is a slight problem, the extend on the sides is off shift in most productions as they use the image captured where the sound would go to add extra info, so it means there is more extra image on the left than the right.

It not noticeable if you don't look for it, but is if you look for it! Elvis by Carpenter, for exemple, is better in widescreen, but if you look for this, you quickly see than almost no shot is centered, the characters are often off center.
