The request doesn't make sense to me - perhaps someone can explain.

Doesn't HDR help preserve a wider contrast range from the original film (or, I guess, digital) source? Meaning that, if the transfer is only available in SDR, that information no longer exists to be 'added'?

I’ve noticed quite a few older films getting 4K releases without HDR but never understood why? Is it that the materials have degenerated to a point where there would be no extra information to be gained?

But yeah, you can’t ‘add’ HDR to a transfer that doesn’t have it..

not if you regrade, its like upsampling music, or playing old tapes through a better stereo, you "hear" more. The information may not be there, but that's not the point. AI is generating new images from older ones "guessing" at details that were not captured in the original. Sometimes it gets it right, sometimes not.. our eyes can spot it.
