I've long been curious as to whether the 1999 DVD 5.1 was the 70mm mix. Do you know if the Criterion LD 2.0 is sourced from the optical or studio master?

Since Criterion LDs used different masters and sources than Sony's own releases, it probably uses the 2.0 from the studio master tape. One person in the Ghostbusters BD.com thread mentioned the UHD and BD's 2.0 sounded a bit flatter and dupier while one of his LDs sounded cleaner and crisper like a CD (Don't remember which LD the person exactly referred to, probably the 1993 JPN Columbia-TriStar LD or the Criterion one). Criterion's Bram Stoker's Dracula LD uses a different 2.0 mix from the studio master tape (which is what the theatrical DD 5.1 mix is based on and has alternate cues and SFX not in Dolby Stereo release mix), whereas the 2.0 on CTHV releases use the Dolby Stereo optical of the general release mix.

Also worth noting that the Atmos mix is not a direct upmix of the BD's 5.1 or the Superbit DVD remix. It's an entirely new mix based on the M/D/E master stems and soundtrack recordings, with some additions and other tidbits optimized for Atmos.

Seeing some reports from the BD forums that the 2.0 is completely borked.
Quote:Anyone else feel like the original 2.0 audio is kind of flat and a bit weird? I was bitstreaming and it sent it as DTS-HD MA 2.0, but wouldn't let me apply any Dolby Surround processing and it kind of sounded a bit like multichannel stereo. Dialogue was coming out of all three front channels and the surround channels seemed mostly focused only on the left surround. The 5.1 and Atmos sounded fine, but the 2.0 just sounded off.

Quote:I finally tried it today and you're absolutely right -- in fact the 2.0 track on GB1 is completely f---d up. It's just like the screwed-up 2.0 track in the HARD TARGET UHD from Kino. I was able to apply Dolby Surround or DTS:X Neural processing on it, but it doesn't matter what you selected because it behaved exactly the same way: if you play it back in a matrixed surround format as intended, dialogue comes out of every channel including the rears. It's obviously been encoded or transferred incorrectly like some kind of "all channel stereo".

I'm surprised it hasn't been a bigger issue but it's completely screwy and should be fixed.

Quote:Can confirm this on my copy, too. Dialogue is coming through all speakers, and there seems to be a slight phasiness on the track. Wow.
And it's the same story on GB2. Weird; when I got the set, I looked at some extras, watched Afterlife, and only glanced at the first two. But I still can't believe I didn't notice this earlier.
The 2.0 tracks on the standard BDs are fine. They matrix just how they're supposed to. I wonder what happened.

So I guess the LD audio is still necessary to keep around.

I am, along with others most likely, annoyed that this set is limited. The studio hasn't announced the limited availability of this product before the release. I go to pre-order when announced to be able to and it was 'sold out' per say at the time. Eventually it comes back but I find it for $250. I am frustrated with the studio's distribution

This is the first time sense The 90s any form of the theatrical mix was available. The 5.1 remix for both Ghostbusters 1 & 2 was done in the mid-2000’s. I’ve been wondering what is the difference between the original mix and the 5.1’s for both films.

Ghostbsters had a 6-track mix for 70mm on its original release.
Spilt or Baby Boom?

My money is on Sony releasing the new discs as standalone steelbooks. They have released new editions on Bridge on the River Kwai, Dracula and Labyrinth

I hope so. Even non-steelbook sepeate releases would be sufficient enough
