Hello FanRes,

I did this project for a friend, but I figured I'd share it anyways. And I'm probably not the only one on this website to have done this project. But...what the heck. Compare mine with others and tell me what you think!

Specs
File
  • MKV, 16.82 GB
  • H.264 codec
  • True 24fps frame rate and speed, NOT the HD frame rate of 23.976fps.

Audio
  • 5.1 Dolby TrueHD
  • Combination of the 5.1 DTS-HD MA track from the blu-ray version and a 2.0 Dolby Digital track from the TV version. I made sure that transitions were as smooth and seamless as possible.

About the Project

Prior to its theatrical release in 1986, the original cut of Cobra was over two hours. However, the producers were worried that Top Gun (which was released before Cobra) would still overshadow the film. So they demanded that it be cut down as much as possible so that it could get more screen times in the day.

Stallone himself was heavily involved in the editing process. From what I've read, most scenes involving other characters were cut, except the scenes of himself  Big Grin

If you're reading this thread, you're probably aware of the existence of a TV version which has about 6 additional minutes of footage. I combined the blu-ray version with the extended TV version.

The TV version censored many parts, both in audio and video. So if the TV version censored parts, I used the blu-ray version. Wink In fact, my version is LONGER than the TV version!

APOLOGIES: The source I used for the TV version was not that great. It was PAL formatted (which wasn't an issue). However, it had a lot of "noise", and I don't have DNR capabilities. And keep in mind that color-correcting/color-blending is a bit difficult with such a LQ source.

I had to resync the audio on the TV version I had, because for some reason audio was WAY out of sync.

Also, my source for the TV version had Swedish subtitles. And it has a big "4" on the top right corner (indicating a TV-channel).

2+hr Workprint?
I remember reading somewhere that a 2+hr work print had leaked, and is now rare. Do any of you have it? And if so, would you like to share?!

Anyways, PM me if you want the project. Also PM me if you think you have any better sources for the TV cut. But if you have that 2-hr work print...oh boy that would be awesome.

Someone here talks about a workprint on VHS but that was posted 3 years ago. I doubt it was ever found. I assume the only extended version available is the Swedish tape with subtitles.

Quote:The uncut VHS video tape is long gone. I owned this in 1991 or 92. Terrible quality, with a running counter on top of the screen. Im sure post of the footage has been lost and we will never see a BluRay release of this extended cut. I also had Die Hard 2 Workprint around the same time.

[...]

At the time I obtain the VHS I was working in a video store. The owner had a working relationship with producer Menahem Golan. My then boss had been involved a few movie deals with Menahem Golan as a producer in the 1980s but got wiped out $$ and left the movie business.

I once met Menahem Golan along with Lorenzo Lamas.

Anyway this was a time when Laser Disc was a fad and my boss obtained a large garbage bag from Golan with VHS tapes (movies he probably had been involve in) one of these tapes was the COBRA work print. We all made a personal copy in the back like we did with a lot of movies. Despite being directly from the source the quality was shit. Sloppy transfer.

I have to check my parents garage and if I find the tape I will send it to you for free. I will keep this post in mind.
AKA thxita on OriginalTrilogy
I preserve movies as they first appeared in Italy.

Hmmm, the shooting script reveals nothing is lost apart from the stuff from the TV version.
Probably the workprint was like the final film, only with all scenes much longer, as usual, and with the TV stuff still in.
There was probably one or two musical montage, that Stallone cut out, apart from the TV stuff.
