[Released] Aliens SE (almost) original audio
#1
So, I love Aliens SE version. Wanted to upgrade the bluray audio to something else.
There is a 35mm print floating with great 2.0 flac audio. Took that one to the basis of the project.
I cleaned the audio a bit with rx11 eliminating the worst ”snap, crackle & pop”. Then synced it to theatrical bluray.
Next I took the stereo track from the SE version from UHD. I know there is a debate wether the track is original stereo or 5.1 fold down. Anyways, I like it more than the bluray dtsma. So I took the SE parts from UHD stereo and combined both tracks. Finally I took the SW track and LS/LR tracks from bluray and combined them to my own frankenstein 4.1 (actually 5.1 but C is empty). Result -> nice audio upgrade.

The 2.0 should be matrixed 4.0, so I wouldn't just use it as LR and take the LS/RS and LFE from other mixes. If anything maybe de-matrix it to get front L C R channels then use the surrounds and LFE from the 5.1

Thanks for the advice! What is the best way to dematrix? Foobar Freesurround? Specweb?

The best way? Probably with a hardware decoder.
But the best practical way? I'm not sure. Others can probably chime in with what options are out there.

LtRtMatrix is an amazing software decoding solution if you have something like REAPER, sounds way cleaner than Freesurround. Only downside is that it's 5.0 (duped mono surround) aka Pro Logic I only as of now but in my test its a great tool.

I concur, awesome tool this one. I'm still not sure if we should leave the steering strength at default (1) or turn it up to 2. IMO 2 yields better separation
