The Sword in the Stone (1963) - 1080p Open-Matte BD
#31
Well, I thought I would post a little update...

First, grrrrrr.... I have to re-render the video one more time as I found one frame that is damaged and needs to be fixed. DAMN!!! Sad But, whatever, no worriesSmile

Now that I got that outta my system, LOL, I want to address the progress (and there been a lot) on the audio work I am doing for this project. I finally got fed up with trying to locate certain sources online, "bit the bullet," and purchased a few DVDs for this project. The way I look at it is, Disney f***ed up with the official release by over-cropping, DNR'ing the film to death (one of the worst offender of the "smear-o-vision" effect) and including only 5.1 upmixes for nearly all languages (there are a few exceptions, but very few that have their original mono as an option) The purpose of this project is to provide the best video (which I have hands-down for this) AND to provide the original mono mixes for ALL language options. Since this is the case, I will NOT be including ANY 5.1 audio mix for this project. Those that want, can mux the BD upmixes themselves (the video is synced to the BD) but I will only be including original mixes. There are a couple that were originally dubbed in Stereo (the Russian and Romanian and one more if I remember right) and those will be included in that format. I basically wanted all original audio tracks only and no upmixes.

In order to do this, I had to track down 1st editions, from 1999, of a few different discs. So, I purchased a DVD release from Germany, one from Poland, one from Portugal, and one from Denmark. I was also given a copy of the Korean dub by a friend and I already have the 1999 R1 disc which has the original mono for Spanish.

I now have a very impressive list of audio selections, all original mixes:

English - downmixed BD stereo track to mono for reference (don't think I need to include this, LOL... unless it's for comparison)
English - Original mono sourced from JPN LD
English - Original mono sourced from R2 DVD (slightly different than LD track, as it's missing a sound effect)
English - Original mono sourced from JPN LD/OST Vinyl LP - a hybrid (with little alternate dialog and two alternate versions of songs thanx to vinyl lp)
Arabic - Original mono dub sourced from a bootleg R1 DVD
Bulgarian - Original mono voice-over sourced from R2 DVD
Chinese Mandarin - Original mono dub sourced from NTSC VCD
Czech - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Danish - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Dutch - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
French - Original mono dub sourced from PAL LD
German - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Greek - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Hebrew - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Hindi - Original mono dub sourced from German BD
Hungarian - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Italian - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Korean - Original mono dub sourced from R3 DVD
Norwegian - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Portuguese (Brazil) - Original mono sourced from R1 DVD
Portuguese (Euro) - Original mono sourced from R2 DVD
Romanian - Original Dolby Stereo dub sourced from R2 DVD
Russian - Original Dolby Stereo dub sourced from EUR BD
Swedish - Original mono dub sourced from R2 DVD
Ukrainian - Original mono voice-over sourced from PAL DVB broadcast

I attempted to sync what I had from youtube of the Finnish dub (which wasn't on any of the discs I purchased) but there was just too much missing there and I decided against including it. The only "good" thing that came out of it was that I discovered the damaged frame in my video that I need to fix, which will be easy.

I have six more audio tracks to finish syncing, then re-render the video, collect subtitles together and I will be releasing this. This ended up turning into a huge project, but I have had a lot of fun with it. I discovered that the English original mono mix on DVD is missing a sound effect that is present on the LD and on numerous other dubs, but (very interestingly) also missing on the BD. In fact, there are two I can think of off the top of my head (although there are more) as examples of things missing on the DVD/BD upmix: first, when Wart falls through the roof of Merlin's house, the sfx of him "thumping" into the chair is missing; the second, is right after the Wart falls through the chimney in Madam Mim's house, when she throws down the playing cards onto the table, you can hear the cards sfx on the LD but not on the BD. There are a few others, but I don't remember them all now.

Wow.. first time I saw this thread... and your last post makes me wish that it is done soon. Smile I really love that movie, and it would be great to witness it in its great Open Matte in HD. And the Audio Options you present are damn GREAT!

Thanx guys, appreciate the support Ok

So, finally, I have all of the foreign dubs synced to my encode.

I still have to sync the audio for the custom audio track that will contain Vinyl LP audio mix, but this is for less than 10 minutes of footage and should be pretty straight-forward (was just too tired this morning to do it)

Then, I need to collect all the subtitles for the languages I have included, make sure they are properly synced and this can be releasedSmile

Turns out the video "glitch" that I thought I found in my render is something I found in ALL editions of this film (which means, DVD and BD releases, as well as the web-dl and hdtv versions) so it will be left "as-is" and I don't have to waste time re-rendering this project and can move on to the next after I release thisBig Grin

Well, sh*t! Turns out that the Vinyl LP audio is timed so differently that there is no possible way to re-edit it back in. I tried everything, including time-stretching here and there but nothing workedSad

Oh well, that was just an extra idea. I got most, but not all, of the subtitle tracks. Pretty much everything I could track down. All subtitles are text-based SRT and are muxed into the mkv. The final size is 19.1GB and should be up on the spleen within next few hours. Gotta make kids dinner first and then write a description but expect this soonWink

That's too bad Jerry , the LP would've been pretty sweet i bet. Oh well you can't win them all, at leas you tried.

Awesome news though that we'll be able to see it soon!

As would I. I'm also planning to use some clips for my Walt Disney Classics video project, to represent that film's Classics release in its segment.
