OK done with Fight Club and rendering Se7en now. This took a lot longer then I thought because I switched up how I converted SDR/709 to HDR/2020. Before I used the functions in Resolve (CST, etc) and then graded shots as needed. This time around I found a somewhat faster way to convert using some more commercial LUTs and some other tinkering. A major problem is getting the CLL/FLL still takes forever whichever way I choose (was using Resolve, now trying Dolby's toolset). But even faster it took a long time to figure out how to do the work properly and then 5-6 encodes to get that right.

Ok after a few issues, I'm done with Se7en
Se7en1995.US.BD.Upscale.2160p.HDR10.HEVC.Cinema.DTS.5.1.v1.8 https://imgur.com/4iDfFpB Final Audio: DTS-HD MA 5.1 (from the Cinema DTS discs) Dolby Digital 5.1 (from the CC CE LD) PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the CC CE LD) Dolby Digital 5.1 (from the New Line LD) PCM 2.0 Dolby Surround (from the New Line LD) Dolby Digital 5.1 (from the Original US DVD) DTS 5.1 ES (from the CE DVD) Dolby Digital 5.1 EX (from the CE DVD) DTS-HD MA 5.1 (from the CAN BD) DTS-HD MA 7.1 (from the US BD) PCM 2.0 Commentary (from the CE LD) Dolby Digital 2.0 Commentary#1 (from the US BD) Dolby Digital 2.0 Commentary#2 (from the US BD) Dolby Digital 2.0 Commentary#3 (from the US BD) Dolby Digital 2.0 Commentary#4 (from the US BD) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So one thing of note. I normally don't compare soundtracks as I'm syncing them. It just takes too much time. But while syncing the LD tracks (the CC and NL tracks appear to be the same), I noticed that were mixed very differently in spots when compared to the most "original track", the C-DTS. Apparently, I forgot about this note from the CC LD: New surround sound mix supervised by sound designer Ren Klyce, optimized for home theater listening I usually chalk this up to marketing but in this case it seems to be true. Its particularly noticeable in ambient effects and music. For example, scenes involving rain have the sound of rain much more prominent and louder on the LD mix then the original tracks. Overall, a fun alternative to the other mixing. The CE DVD and BD tracks seem to closer to the C-DTS but with the split rears. The original NL DVD mix is...odd. So the LD tracks are def worth a listen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Game is next up after I finish something else.

So I see, for "Seven", you went for a conservative grading as to the one presented on the Blu-ray. Were you not considering grading it to the CCE look of the Criterion LD or the original New Line DVD?

Yeah, this is just the BD colors upscaled.
The second upcoming version will use the Canadian Blu-ray which has the colors as the SE DVD. I IVTC’d that and cropped it down to the LD’s framing with the thought of release that. And I may grade that to the LD which is about 80% the same colors as the DVD with notable exceptions like the ending outside under the power lines.
Right. The climax in the desert has been changed edition after edition after edition... They never really settled with one color for the sky and the darkness in the faces' shadows.
The Canadian Blu-ray is indeed the open matte version of the 2000 SE DVD which was the 1st time they digitally recreated the original look with some tweakings here and there. Except that the Canadian Blu-ray is rather low contrast. Colors look bland because of the lack of blacks. Are you aware of the Dutch Blu-ray, which is basically the HD version of the 2000 SE DVD? Contrast is much better than the Canadian Blu-ray. It's 2.35:1 already, but probably not the same framing as the LD since the 2000 SE bonus features show they reframed the shots. If you need the Dutch one, I should be able to provide it. I have an encode that I made out of it, that's for sure, but I should still have the full disc or a remux somewhere. Thanks given by: PDB

Yeah I adjusted the contrast on the Canadian BD but the Dutch one sounds much better. I was unaware of that copy. If you don’t mind Beber I’d love to give it a look.
