Viability of cheap VHS capture
One option I’m thinking is doing a test capture without the TBC. If the glitches are still there maybe that’ll get us somewhere.

Well turns out I have to wipe my computers memory and turns out the virus was caused by VDub! Guess i wont be using that. Oh well.

Ok scratch what I said about VDub giving me the virus. It may not have. I was actually installing another program at the time the virus surfaced so most likely it was that. My stepdad was the one I had look at my computer since he’s usually pretty handy with them and he assumed the virus was because of VDub since it was a program that had been installed from about the past day up until then. Also I probably should have said hard drive not memory in my last post.

Anyways I’m still waiting to get the computer up and running again so this will have to remain on hold until then. What I will likely do first before trying VDub again is do two test captures, one with TBC and one without, using either Pinnacle or Roxio (thinking Pinnacle this time) just to test whether or not the TBC might be part of the issue. Stay tuned everyone.

Got my computer running again. I did a test capture without TBC. About 15-20 minutes in and haven’t noticed anything at least anything that really stood out. Will try to finish test watching tomorrow and hopefully do a test capture with TBC. The setup I did for tonight was 2008 Dazzle through 2016 Pinnacle.

Thinking of possibly looking into getting another VCR, one with an S-Video output. People keep saying S-Video gives better quality but I’ve never been able to try it since none of my VCR’s have an output for it. I’ve been doing Composite all this time. Should I possibly look into this??

S-VHS usually bear better results due to its better construction quality and audio/video electronics used; do not think that a VHS played in a S-VHS "magically" would become perfect, but it almost surely have a better picture and audio.

Here, you can get an used S-VHS recorder for as low as 30/40€, usually in fair condition - just look at the plastic, in particular button conditions; if the writings are gone, its video heads are probably near the end...

I’ll look into it. I was using this page as a reference.

http://www.digitalfaq.com/guides/video/c...rdware.htm

The GE VCR I use it still good for playback but considering it’s really the only VCR I’ve been doing this on for the past year and I got it at an estate sale a few years earlier for like $5 (good bargain considering how it’s worked if you want my honest opinion) might be time for a different machine.

My Panasonic and Sony machines work about the same. Some tapes play perfectly others I get audio crackle throughout. That’s why I switched to the GE. The tapes that had bad audio on the other machines had better or at the very least much more tolerable audio.

Reviewing the capture I did last night it does appear there was a minor jump in the intro bit so that at least tells me with or without TBC the dropped/added frames will remain. Am I guaranteed getting another VCR will fix this?? Of course not. But I know I’m likely to get better results on a more expensive machine than a more basic machine that’s really only good for playback. I’ll keep reviewing that link and see what I can get a deal on. I’m hoping to also find one that’s got a built in TBC so maybe I don’t have to lug out the DVD recorder each time. We’ll see.

Lastly I do wanna take some time to apologize if I kinda hijack this thread a lot. It’s just a frustrating process that really should be so easy. I do appreciate all the tips I’ve gotten here though Wink

I found a nice quasi-pro Sony unit with hifi but it seems i always get occasional tics and slight noise when playing back anything. My only other deck is an old GE which is fine but is only mono.
