The video is beautifully restored on the BD and, when it comes to the audio, I have all sources out there, except for those original discs which I'm hoping I will be able to gain access to. I have the contact info, but haven't sent an e-mail yet because I'm really busy and I need to make sure that I word everything just right...

Thanx for posting that info about the 16mm Lil BruttoWink (just don't need it)

Slight STATUS update: Ok... No, I haven't tried to contact the person yet... but, I am moving forward with the project still, although I have decided to change my approach a little bit.... Instead of going through each shot and looking at all sources, one after the other, I am now going through each source in it's entirety first and cutting out any parts that will be unusable (such as foreign dialog, sfx that are obviously dubbed in and don't belong, inferior sound quality elements, etc.)

Because of the change in approach, I have already spliced out all of the unnecessary portions from two of five sources (there are a couple of others I will be using for small portions, but those are already "pre-cut") and am half-way through the third source now. What this means is that I will be able to speed things up a lot when doing all of the individual inserts and the additional sources will all already be "pre-cut" for the portions I need to focus on.

It's really messes me up, just how much audio is missing on the English track... Was just "wow'ed" by the fact that two of the dubs actually have the sound effects of the paddles in the water and the moving boats, around the one hour mark, that match what's on-screen perfectly, while the English track just has vinyl crackling there, LOLTongue

There is also a couple of growls by the monster (will post exact timecodes later) where I can tell they were not originally there because the quality changes too drastically for them... I actually spliced some of them out and then re-joined the track and the "splice" is seamless because the quality of the audio is identical, but there is a jarring "jump" in quality, just for some of the growling portions.

There is a lot of bizarre stuff I have been noticing throughout the entire thing... What amazes me the most, is that once this audio track is re-constructed, it will show that the film actually had a very robust, active sound trackOk

Perhaps this will give those who think the film is too quiet a second thought. Wink

"Technically," all of those people were right, even if they were saying it for different reasonsWink

The issue of the music elements that are "missing" from the English track still baffles me. I could see how someone could make the argument that it's not actually missing and was merely added on onto a foreign dub - SINGULAR - or, possibly TWO foreign dubs, especially if there were in close proximity in the world (Spain-Portugal, Italy-France[those have had common weird "extra" stuff exclusive only to those dubs for a lot of films I have synced over the years] Sweden-Finland)

But, the fact that I have now seen/heard, the same music stems (in some cases, also containing the original sfx that are on the English track, but not always in same sync) used in FOUR different dubs (the Italian, Spanish, original Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese redub) playing, roughly, the same way in all instances (there are minor differences in the fact that there are extra/missing frames here and there between the sources, but it's the same mix) is amazing. There are also certain thunder cracks that are during Frankenstein's speech before he raises the monster, that should obviously be there, (by comparing the waveform to that same sound effect in other parts of the film that are used on English track) and the "plagiarized" ones used in some other spots on the dubs - there is a clear difference between the two) and these thunder cracks give VERY specific emphasis to some of the speech.

There are other sound effects here and there on the dubs, that I have been able to find traces of on the English track (even on the BD, but barely there) and what really baffles me here is if they were originally there (and the evidence is there, I can show certain parts, where with the right amplification the sound effect "comes out" on the English track) then what the hell happened to them and why has nothing been done about it until now?

Out of so many people on the planet, I finally noticed this almost by accident and am doing something about it. I am worried that some will question whether it's a "faithful" reconstruction in comparison to the "discs" that were mentioned a few posts back (which I still intend on trying to acquire a dub of) because what if those musical elements are not there? Or if some of the sound effects are not there? Does that necessarily mean that they actually don't belong there. I don't believe so, because we have no way of knowing which "version" of the "original" theatrical print the audio is sourced from. Also, especially with media this old, there will be degradation and some things might get "lost in the noise." I guess we'll see about that if/when I manage to examine that source. For now, there are too many things that sound correct and match sound effects that are actually there, and perfectly match what's onscreen where I would be a fool to dismiss them...

Now I gotta run cuz wife has been yelling at me to go to grocery store since I started writing this post, LOL Tongue
Like I mentioned earlier, it looks like the original sound design for this film, considering when it was made, is absolutely phenomenal and I can't wait to be able to share this with others once it's completedOk

This is all very intriguing, especially regarding the score. The only alternate explanation I can come up with is that there may have been a re-release of the movie years later with an added music score that the dubs are based on. But then again, you'd think there would be info out there on that. But then again again, if the score was originally there, you'd think we'd especially know about that. I've been thinking if it's an idea to email film historians and ask them about the sound design and the music that appears on some foreign dubs. Someone else must have noticed as well.

Once I have the entire thing reconstructed, which will make it easier to make a point to anyone about this, I intend on trying to contact certain film historians and such, asking them about this... I am very puzzled by this, because even in the case of the foreign dubs, there is no references to the score anywhere on the internet and I have been looking extensivelyEyedrop
