Heat: LD Audio

That's a VERY generous offer considering you're the resident expert in syncing audio and coming up with workable solutions for dealing with the more challenging parts. Sometime down the road, would you be interested in assisting me with syncing the LD PCM to the 35MM of GBU?

I don't think Jerry would say no to that. Wink

I am equipped to extract the AC-3 track from the same LD and I'm happy to do it if there's interest. The bitrate will be higher on the LD than, say, the DVD 5.1 track.

Isn't the "standard" bitrate for AC3 on LD 384kbps?
With DVD, I usually see 448kbps, which would be higher than LDWink

As far as syncing GBU audio is concerned...

FUCK YEAH, I would help with that!

Love, love, love the film (on my top 10 all-time favorites list since I was a kid) and I would be honored to help with your ambitious project. I have a lot of experience syncing various languages to each other (which is obvious with all the foreign dubs I have custom synced to nearly all my projects) so regardless of source material, I should be able to get the job done. I'm sure that GBU is going to be a tad-bit more difficult, but I welcome the challengeBig Grin

Just let me know when you're ready to send me the LD PCM and reference audio I'm syncing it toWink

Oops, I got it backwards. Please forgive me. That's what happens when all I think about is PCM mono tracks of GBU!

Great! We still got a long way to go before we're ready to sync the audio. I'll give you a heads up when we're getting closer to that stage. I already have the LD PCM audio captured so that's ready to go.

Wow this is great news guys. I hadn't sat down to watch this in ages because I knew of the BD futzing with color and sound (typical of any Mann film it seems). That the Japanese BD is different is no surprise since WB has been reissuing older discs over there with either improved video specs or lossless audio (Unforgiven, Last Samurai).

A hybrid with the Japanese BD video and the US LD audio tracks would be great and probably the best we could do for now. Don't be fooled by puny 384 kbp/s specs of LD ac3, because those can still knock your head off.

And I'm still probably going to get the LD anyway...why? because I have an addiction to those shiny things...

I just ran the LD with ac3 last night. I'm not a huge expert on this film, but what I came away with is this:

The LD ac3 has tons of high end noise/hiss that shifts with scenes indicating that it is very likely completely untouched. The loud/soft sound shifting is part of the sound design and to my ears works well sometimes for realism and not so well at other instances for jarring you out of the movie. The dialogue is very low in the mix and mushy at times leading many lines to come off as indistinct.
I'll have to try the PCM to compare but it should be the same.

Also of note is that the image is shifted up as if this were from a Japanese master and the subs had been removed ala the SWE Star Wars.

I watched the new blu ray of heat the other week I thought my speakers were gonna explode from the planes going overhead in the end, even in new movies ive never heard audio this loud. my only complaint with the audio is the dialog was mixed too low.
