LaserDiscs needed for replacing BD audio
PDB Wrote:Interesting. It seems its all about what you are use to hearing or grew up with.

Curious if my European friends are all about Goldsmith's score for Legend over Tangerine Dream's US score.

I do not have the scores of Legend in my head. I watched that movie quite late, first time, when it was released on DVD.
So I may have no real Connection to either of the scores. But I have the feeling, that I tend to cherish things I grew up with as a child/teen.
Like there're two diferent dubbing for the old "Masters of the Universe" series in Germany. One uses the voice actor's also used for the Audio tapes, and was done first, but does not Exit for all episodes, the other is a newer one, and sadly the only one avaible in Germany on DVD/ SD2BD.
I know that some People grew up with the newer dub, and do not like the original one.

I think it not neccessary is depending on Quality, but on an emotional level, that make things just 'feel' wrong.

Does anyone have The Sound of Music?

The sound mix is quite a bit different between LD/early DVD and later home releases.

In respect of Legend, the Tangerine Dream score has a certain nostalgic appeal, but overall the Goldsmith one fits the film better.

Anyone in the US willing to bit-perfectly transfer a couple LaserDiscs for me? I'd purchase them and have them sent to you, and you can keep them. I'd like to start with The Apartment (1960), which I already know sounds better than subsequent releases, but other films will be more of a crapshoot.

I'll get both the 2.0 PCM and the 5.1 DTS-HD present on the disc for you later today (I'm doing the uploads).

Some notes on this UK BD:

1- it's enconded at 23.976 fps.
2- It starts with the old Studio Canal intro, followed by the Tri-Star one (which I sadly miss on all Studio Canal UHDs). Funny enough, the SC UHDs have the distributed by TriStar Pictures at the end of the end credits.

Sorry for the delay, finally got around to checking out the Universal Soldier US LD, JP LD, and the UK BD. It looks like the UK BD has been pitch shifted unfortunately. The JP LD is mastered at a pretty low volume, so it appears the US LD is the best version. I will plan on syncing it to the UHD coming up.

Jerry Goldsmith score for the Legend is absolutely amazing! One of his best!!!

(re: Universal Soldier) Hmm, the 16khz hum looks a bit pronounced on the US LD though, so maybe the JP LD would sound a bit more natural?

^ That's one of the things that makes thing the US LD look less processed to me. Going by the spectrals, I'd favor it over the JP LD, which looks more like the UK BD (minus the pitch shifting).

Agree with Chewie, US is only one I've seen that looks untouched. I checked the UHD mix also and its similar to the UK BD with pitch shifting and noise reduction.
