Flash Gordon Regrade (Widescreen Laserdisc v1.0)

This project attempts to regrade they Universal BD to the brighter and more colorful Universal laserdisc. The laserdisc was slightly desaturated (since it’s origins are the NTSC world), skin tones also pulled down and black levels adjusted to bring the video in line with modern standards. That corrected video was used to regrade the BD.

Another future version might use the Image DVD as a basis of the project. The Dvd is the same master as the LD but hopefully with better levels and values.

Note: synced to the US Universal BD

Still in progress. My young child kicked and broke my laptop screen by accident so even though I was far along, I am now only getting the files off that laptop and getting back up to speed. The color grade is done and I'm just reviewing/tweaking it now. Since the audio part is done, thanks to Zoid and Chew, I should have it done sooner then later.

The reason is I always want to create projects that you can burn to BD. You know adhere to a standard. That's why I convert the LD tracks to 48. The volume boost is because most LD tracks are mastered a little lower in volume then modern BD and UHD BD tracks. A boost to the sound means volume is consistent when switching amongst the tracks. Basically you don't have to take the 5 seconds to adjust your volume dial.

That audio list was tentative and changed. Since Zoid recorded it in 44.1 and Chew synced it in 44.1, I'm just going to keep it in that format for this project. Besides the original LD track at 44.1, I also added the internet commentary by Sam Jones and Melody Anderson as a lark. I didn't extensively test it but it seemed in sync except some trimming at the end.

Beyond that I'm pretty close to done. I rendered this out to check it for errors and I went through two rounds of fixes. One thing that came out it was that I still felt the saturation was pushed a little too much. Which is common for NTSC LD transfers. So I kicked the saturation down a little more.

But as of right now I've found all the errors I can find on my own. I'm sure there are more so this is the part I would ask for volunteers to watch and see if they can find any more errors. If no one volunteers I'll consider this a done project.

After 3 more tweaks, I just rendered a new 1.1 version. There could still be some errors but I haven't spotted any. So with that, I'm ready to call this done

Eventually, I'll take a look at the DVD version of this master to see if there is something there to revisit.
