UNSEEN APOCALYPSE NOW FOOTAGE

Seven reels of Super 8 mm film footage of the making of Apocalypse Now (Zoetrope), shot by the Sound Mixer for the film, Jack C. Jacobsen. The film was shot on location in the Philippines in the late 1970s. The content of the film is an extraordinary and unique behind the scenes view of the actors, director, cameras and crew. The viewer gets the chance to see the cast and crew as they are working and preparing for scenes, including an airbase where some of the cast were stationed during the film, on-site offices for the building of sets and props (including where severed limbs and body parts were made), views of the Philippino community, dynamite blasting, and general coverage of the actors and extras in and out of costume. The viewer really gets a sense of everyday life during production. Not only do we see the cameras and sound, but we also see the crew eating, playing ping pong, swimming and rehearsing. We see how the making of this film took over an entire town. Francis Coppola can be seen in many scenes. There are multiple battle scenes including bridges being blown up, extras catching on fire, huts on fire and helicopters flying. One scene shows the crew preparing a battle sequence and arranging fake blood and severed limbs around the actors.

There are 2,050 feet of footage. The color is good, there is no sound.

The really cool hidden audio option is not on the 4K discs and is only found on one of the two included blurays: When one plays the original theatrical cut of AN- again, the bluray version, not the 4K version, the original 1979 5.1 mix is an option - before any tweaks were done. This is lossy Dolby Digital encoded, but never the less, likely is the first time the unaltered original discrete mix has made it to home video.

Wasn't it on the original DVD of the theatrical cut? I think. They started remixing with the Redux cut releases.

One thing, the Final Cut Dolby Surround mix, probably have fold downs of the remixes in the new parts not in the theatrical.

A.N. mixer Walter Murch is on record regarding doing tweaks on the first consumer 5.1 mixes, then some more on Redux, and it's a very safe bet the most noticeable mixing changes are in this latest Atmos / 7.1 mix.

The newest bluray of AN / theatrical cut actually has a couple of English 5.1 tracks (with one listed as "1979 Restored 5.1 mix"), and will be listening to them soon when time permits.

At this point based on cursory listening can confirm the Final Cut 2.0 Dolby Surround mix is not a fold-down of the new mix during the theatrical segments. As for those added Final Cut segments, of course nothing there can ever be called "original mix audio".

Mucked up again! We need new syncs

Quote:So I just got a copy of this and I’ve reviewed both the Blu-ray and 4k discs and a pesky ADR error in the theatrical cut from the last Blu-Ray release (and I believe the Complete Dossier DVD too, I can’t remember) has reared its ugly head on this release:
In the theatrical version at the Do Lung bridge, they get their mail and leave Chief. Chief says “where are you going, Captain?” and in The theatrical version Willard says :
"I gotta find somebody - I need some information.
And in the Redux cut Willard says:
“See if I can find some fuel - get some information.”
The Blu-ray that contains the theatrical cut actually has a restored theatrical audio option that is only available on the 1979 cut. The good news? The original line is on that audio track. The bad news? It is ONLY available on that audio track. The 1979/Redux 4k disc only has 1 audio track, a Dolby Atmos mix, and that mix contains the “fuel” version on the theatrical cut.
Even worse, the reason that line was changed is to set up the scene where they trade the fuel for sex with the Playboy Bunnies. Redux is the only version of the film with that scene, so both the theatrical version and the Final Cut version should have the “somebody” version. This modified line should ONLY exist on the Redux version. If you prefer to watch the 4k version then you’re out of luck in regards to the correct audio.
They wouldn’t even need to include an alternate audio track to account for this change if they wanted to fix it. If you can seamlessly branch entire scenes into the movie then you can seamlessly branch both versions of this line on the 4k disc.
I’m pretty sure there will be no recall or replacement disc because this error exists on 3 of the 4 movie discs in this set, and arguably could be corrected on other audio tracks on the the 1979/Redux Blu-Ray disc too.

When one loads playlist 00801.mpls (the theatrical cut) into MKVToolNix, which track is the original mix? It's easy enough when you are in the BD's menu, but it's hard to keep track of what's what when remuxing. There are no fewer than six English tracks. And the embedded 5.1 track in the main audio stream doesn't help.

Yep but that version is compressed I think?

According to the poster on the other forum, you would need the older Blu-ray for the uncompressed track.
