Mulan (1998) DVD/LD audio request
#1
Hi There!  Smile

With the recent release of the surprisingly great and faithful UHD-BD, specially for Disney standards, with original 1.66 aspect ration and studio intro, I'd like to put together a Definitive Edition audio pack with the BD and DVD audio.

If anyone can provide the DVD 5.1 AC-3 track, preferably from the original THX 1999 DVD.

If anyone has the rare Japanese LD PCM track it would be fantastic, but I guess that's too much wishful thinking. I tryied to get ti myself but couldn't even find a single copy for sale.

I'd be glad to try to sync any of the provided tracks and share them in this community.

Thanks a lot!

The LD isn't AC-3 anyway, but I have also been trying to find one because I wouldn't be surprised if the Dolby mix is good.

I sadly only have the Blu-ray, which isn't likely to help you much.

I have the R3 DVD. Not sure if the track is different to the THX version but I can get that over to you.

But perhaps of more interest, this release also includes Cantonese and Mandarin dubs which has Jackie Chan providing the voiceover for Captain Li Shang.

On an only vaguely related note, I've got the Hong Kong LaserDisc version of Twin Dragons en route which contains the Mandarin dub on which he sings the end credits song so I'm pretty excited about that tbh

Yeah, unfortunately the LD doesn't have AC-3, but I'm sure the PCM is great as most late 90ies releases usually are.

Thanks a lot for the BD audio, but I already have the DTS-HD MA and intend  to sync it as well. But is your version the US one? If so, than it should have the Portuguese 5.1 track and that I would apprecite very much.

WOW fantastic! These would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot NeonBible!

The Mandarin was also on the 2004 US 2 disc DVD set as an unadvertised bonus track, and it interested me a great deal.

I cannot promise the Cantonese sync, but if the edits are simple enough, I'll give it a shot too.

The 1999 Gold Collection DVD has the theatrical DD 5.1 mix at 384kbs from what I remember. It is a film based transfer that has non-anamorphic and 4:3 versions on the disc, which also implies it's the same source used on the LD and VHS. Fun fact: the HDTV source as well as the iTunes Spain version use the film transfer in HD, and reportedly have a higher bit-rate version of the DD 5.1 mix.

The 2004 DVD as well as the previous Blu and UHD are a direct to digital transfer from CAPS files. The 5.1 mix on the 2004 DVD (also carried over to the BD) is an unadvertised Disney Enhanced Home Theater ground up remix from the digital master source recording (before it got transferred to theatrical Dolby Digital and DTS formats). I imagine it has volume and mixing differences compared to the theatrical DD/DTS mixes, but I didn't hear of any drastic sound changes for the worst unlike say the 2006 DVD of TLM. The Atmos/7.1 on the UHD is said to be an expansion of the DEHT mix with added SFX (most noticable during the Avalanche sequence and the ending Fireworks scene).

Always fun to hear Jackie sing! This R3 Mulan disc also has MVs with Jackie singing in Cantonese.

The original UK R2 DVD also featured a film transfer, but of course that would be PAL.

Fantastic information SpaceBlackKnight, thanks a lot!
I didn't know any of it
Do you have the Gold Collection DVD?
_________

Thanks a lot NeonBible for the R3 2004 edition tracks!
I'll start working on them right away.
_________

I managed to get the Brazilian Portuguese 5.1 from the US BD. Nevertheless, thanks a lot to pipefan413 for the offer!
_________

So, the Original 5.1 from the first DVD edition is still in the open. I'd really appreciate if anyone with access to it could share.

Great, thanks a lot pipefan, I really appreciate it!

Partial update and a question about sync choice:

The UHD DTHD 7.1-Atmos embedded DD 5.1 640kbps features the exact same mix as the BD DTS-HD MA 5.1 track at a slightly lower level (so the BD is a little louder)
The R3 DD 5.1 384kbps features a slightly different mix with relatively higher levels on fronts and center than the two previous mixes.

Now for the question, in order not to decode, I a have to make a choice in which the resynced audio would run either -5ms or +5ms from the target track. I know it's such a slight difference, but is there a general principal among experienced syncers which is preferable? Running ahead or behind the target?
