Heat 1995 - Materials Required
#1
Hi All,

I'm currently about half way through a full regrade of Heat and wondered if anyone can help with the following:

German and Spanish 5.1 Audio - must be sourced from DVDs not blu ray - German DVD for example had both
English 5.1 DTS - Appeared on both Japanese DVDs and the South Korean DVD

Many thanks

Do you have a reference source for your regrade? 'Cause I saw a 35mm print in 2014 or 2015 and was shocked to see how colorfull and warm the movie really is. DVDs and Blu-rays are all cool, bland, desaturated, but the 2009 Warner is the best basis as a bump in saturation makes it a lot closer to a print, reviving the cyan blues and orange warmth, whereas an increase in saturation won't do it with the Fox "remaster" because they intervened colorwise in the meantime, not even to make it right...

Unfortunately the 4K master represents the film as Mann wants it to look now, he basically said if Heat had been shot at this point in time (ie digitally with a DI grade) it would be graded like the 4K.
Interested to hear more about this project. Will it be a reconstruction of the theatrical cut? To echo what Beber said is this a regrade to an existing master (ie LD/DVD) or off a 35mm screening, or other (personal preference etc)?

I'm using the early DVD as a reference. Also restoring the audio and upscaling the shot from the DVD that was cut from the blu ray. I'm going shot by shot so it's taking a long time!

See the reply to Beber as well but essentially it will be the Japanese Blu Ray, cut to match the LD frame for frame, with the color taken from the old DVD and the audio from the LD. One shot needs to be taken from the DVD which was cut from all blu ray releases. I also looked at using the new blu ray and a 4K webrip but in comparison to the Japanese disc they are zoomed in and lose picture on all four sides. Hoping it will be done by the end of the year.

Your screen captures sure look nice. I made my own thing after my 35mm screening using the Warner Blu-ray. After some tests, I found a saturation level that looked okay and quite similar overall to the print to recapture the cinematic experience. That's all it took. I didn't bother with a shot by shot correction that I didn't even know how to do back then. Surely a few additional isolated corrections would have been better.

Disney & Regency have just agreed a new deal but not sure if it includes catalogue or just new releases.

Okay, hope it will come out one day as Mann was really involved in the remaster, shot by shot.
I'm gonna give a try to the 4k webdl i've found, but don't know what source or master it is.

Unfortunately Michael Mann being involved in the remaster is a very bad thing. Not only has he cut a shot and a few lines of dialogue he drenches the whole thing in teal. In addition to that the 4K webrip is also zoomed in on all four sides, so I'm not that optimistic that a 4k disc release will be any good to be honest...
