Doubt it. The Criterion 5.1 audio was overseen by the director himself. When you select it, it even states that the director recommends the audio be played loud for best effect

When you select it, it even states that the director recommends the audio be played loud for best effect The original soundtrack is a surround matrixed 2.0 (presented on DVD) and the remaster is simply a 5.1 repurposing of the original 6-track mag audio. So in theory they should be exactly the same. Bearin mind however Malick supervised and approved the transfer of the audio, and it's likely not revisionist, but that doesn't mean it's free of Criterion's detrimental home video secret sauce. These directors usually only approve of the restoration itself. On comparison if the DVD is clearly more dynamic that means Criterion hit it with their audio equivalent of grain reduction, which wouldn't be the only nor last time!
