Code:
English 5.1 Laserdisc AC3 (dialnorm not removed)
English 5.1 DVD AC3

Which is which?

I'm using MKVToolNix to convert to MKVC but they're not labelled.

Cheers.

Yes blu ray authoring won’t label tracks outside of the three digit language code. If it’s in order PCM is track 1, LD AC3 is track 2 and DVD AC3 is track 3.

Does anyone know which English-track is the best in terms of overall sound mix balance? I'm so used to watching Heat's German dub whenever it's on TV that I was shocked at the unbalanced sound mix of the original audio when introducing a friend to the film on Blu-Ray last year. I get that the guns have to be ear-deafeningly loud, but the music and the dialogue are often drowned out and hard to make out. I constantly had to raise and lower the volume on my home theater set. With the German dub the music and dialogue seem to be far better balanced. It only sounded right to me during the chase from the hotel to the airport onwards.
When this disc hits 8800 RPM, you're gonna see some serious shit.

Congratulations alleycat!!! Impressive project!

Heat is such a gem that has been very mistreated after LD days.

On top of that, I'm not sure if Mann is worse than Lucas like dvdmike says, but he's certainly one of the worst offenders on the revisionism front.

The gunshots are supposed to be loud. If you can't hear what's being said you need to turn the volume up Smile

WRT Mann being the worst revisionist, I think its more that the changes are unnecessary as the films got it right the first time. There are worst offenders out there for revisionism but some changes hurt more than others if you get my meaning

In the bank robbery scene I think the gunshots are intended to be deafening. In my memory that part was always very loud, but I haven't seen it in cinemas, only TV and home video.
AKA thxita on OriginalTrilogy
I preserve movies as they first appeared in Italy.

The gunshot sounds are in fact to be intended as loud as they were. To my knowledge they wasn‘t altered in post because Mann wanted them as real as possible. That’s also the reason why they used real blank ammunition, this one is identical to life ammunition in terms of sound produced due to fireing and yes it‘s in fact very loud when you fire an ar rifle.

I agree in part, but he has altered all of his movies so far hasn't he?

Probably, I'm not an authority on Mann by any means but I know he likes to tinker, and treats each new master as an opportunity to tweak things. So yes he probably has more offences than others, I'm just not convinced anything he's done is as cosmically bad as what Lucas/Cameron/Spielberg have done, but YMMV

As far as I'm aware of, he pretty much has done at least one thing to each and every one of his movies. Even The Keep had revisionism (redone optical effect and the extended TV cut ending) and that movie doesn't even have a proper release LOL

I don't necessarily think he's as bad as the above given a number of his releases separate things between theatrical and director's cut, but it's definitely excessive lol
