I thought this was a DGA rule that came in recently.I've heard this come up, but who knows? Recently, Soderbergh expressed surprise over Kino's new 4K release of Out of Sight. Edgar Wright seemed somewhat annoyed Universal released his Cornetto trilogy on 4K without asking him. It doesn't seem the Coens nor Roger Deakins approved the new Big Lebowski 4K. All these instances are actually Universal titles, which also owns Miami Vice. But Mann has a reputation for being a bit hands on so I imagine a new transfer should've gone past him. But then again, wasn't Miami Vice mostly shot on HD video? Universal has usually opted to upscale their films that we're finished digitally.
You see the odd little anecdote about a Director not being aware of a foreign 4K release but in those cases the DoP has usually been involved
