The Matrix Open Matte / Original Colour?
#1
I seem to have come across something from my past that I've had for years but never really gave a second thought.
After joining this board a while back now it has reignited my passion around Laserdisc's and other versions of movies.
Currently re bought a Laserdisc player and currently working my way through buying all my fav discs again.

Anyway, I found a disc I got back in 2005 of the Matrix from eBay. I can't even remember why I got it to be honest, I just did.

From looking at it again it seems to have something close to the original colour timing of the movie when first released and also is cropped in 1:85 which looks fantastic on a HDTV, admittedly its only in 720p but still looks amazing.

Here are some screenshots from it, I'm thinking it would be great to replace the audio with maybe the LD PCM or something as the audio that comes with is okay.

It's strange that is cropped to 1.85:1; anyway, there are open matte (1.78:1) 1080p versions around, of all the three films.

Now, if you would like to add the LD PCM (or AC3), first you need to find out the LD... Big Grin

Okay Sporv so do you think the colour looks like a match to the original?

LD is $145! Ouch. Not rushing to get it lol.

Spent more than enough on LD recently

The color grading is the same of the DVD; can't say it it's the ones seen theatrically, but, for sure, better than the tweaked ones on BD!

Someone claimed that the LD has different colors than DVD, someone else they are the same... that's why I'm curious to see some screenshots taken from it... and ah-ha, you got it... it costs so much!

According to this thread the LD is somewhere between the 35mm and DVD

I'm surprised no one has ripped The Matrix laserdisc yet. The few copies I've seen at eBay do seem pricey but if someone was to buy it and resell (with a rip inbetween) they probably wouldn't be out too much. Still it's not as expensive as Fight Club or some of the MUSE laserdiscs!

According to LDDB thread, the screenshots taken from X9 capture are really close to DVD, while another one is really different... don't know if it's due to players used, or just that the different scene has... well, different colors indeed!

I'm ready to capture the laserdisc, if someone would send it to me, and, if its colors are effectively diffrent from the DVD, to use it as color reference for my project update.

There is a Video CD out there that is from the same master as the Hong Kong full frame LD. It even goes to black for a second or two where the LD side breaks would be. Would that be any good for a color reference?
