If it's full frame (open matte and not p&s) I say so; but the HK LD would be better, of course!
Can you post some screenshots? I'm curious to see that.

I would have thought purely because of the difference in black point between LD and DVD there would be a difference?
DVD IRE starts at 0 whereas LD is around 7.5? I think. If I could get the LD for $100 then I'd buy, it's just too much at $145

This version I have seems to have been the topic of conversation over on original trilogy at some point. Sporv you spoke in this thread.
Pre HD releases, this was available from somewhere. This is why I bought it at the time. Colour does seem slightly different from DVD and more info top and bottom of the image.

At least two went for less than $100 on Ebay last fall. The trick is to keep watching for a copy to pop up. It's always going to be a desirable title because it came out in the waning days of the LD format. At least it doesn't command crazy ass prices like X Men or Titan A.E.

Based on the manufacturing do we also need to be aware of laser rot on the matrix discs?

Also, seen the price on the x men LD oh my gentle Jesus!

Based on the LDDB entry, it seems the probability of rot is low. An older gas tube laser player like mine doesn't "see" minor LD rot which shows up on later models as speckling in the video.
http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/09271/17665/Matrix-The It would have to be very severe rot to affect the audio.

Can we not consider the 35mm scan a good reference? I know the blacks are mega crushed but aren't the colours ok?

Probably The Matrix has a very low probabilty to be affected by laserrot, but using a MUSE player should read through it as well, eventually.
We have to just to find out IF the laserdisc is different from the DVD, or, indeed, the 35mm should be used, as it seems the most logical choice. |
