[In progress] Event Horizon BD fix
#11
Cheers!

It's quite striking how poorly the main feature fares. I've created a few comparisons to the trailer included on the Blu-ray. Obviously it may not be an accurate representation of how the film was supposed to look (it's quite heavy in saturation), but it's interesting nonetheless.

There are two color gradings of this movie, LD and old DVD, and SE DVD and BD; can't say the trailer reflects the LD/old DVD one, but IIRC they have more saturated colors in comparison to BD/SE DVD.

I'd just be interested to know what the correct aspect ratio is for the BD to eliminate the stretching.

If you're happy enough remuxing to an MKV, adding 1.88 to the aspect ratio in MKVtoolnix works well. Seems correct to my eyes; comparing to the original DVD and a frame-for-frame with the trailer. It's not actually 1.88 of course, that just tells the 1.778 (letterboxed) to play back at 1.88. Saves you reencoding; assuming you're using a player than can read the flag. MPC-HC and KODI both do, but sadly the native player on my TV doesn't.

I'll match this up exactly now, something tells me it might vary per scene...which is troubling.

OK, with pixel counting against the NTSC DVD (non Special Edition), the correct aspect for the letterboxed 1.778 Blu-ray is 1.88. Try that setting. It's tricky because the framing is different and there's also a very slight rotation clockwise to the image.

Here's a corrected image using the method explained:

And a screencap of the NTSC DVD from caps-a-holic for reference:

Aspect ratio is 2.47. So it's way off on the Blu-ray (presented as 2.335).

Thanks for the images - I used them to make a screenshot comparison:

It's a pity that BD, even if earned image parts left and right, has lost bottom one...

Yeah big shifts in the bottom frame, it's a shame.

I always loved the cover art on the Laserdisc and original DVD! Super tacky, kinda fun.

Would love to see what it looks like on 35mm for framing and colour. At least one is out there:

Definitely like the colors of the LD/original DVD better then the BD/CE DVD. Particularly the blues. Might make a nice project.
