[Canceled] Batman (1989) - Open Matte (Upscale Project )
#21
Believe it or not, I actually got some good laughs out of the toy commercial that is B&R (and even the director was jaded enough by what the execs did to it--that's right, it was no more Joel Schumacher's fault, if that, than it was Bob Daly and Terry Semel's--that he made a point of reminding everyone that they were shooting, in his very words, "a toy commercial"). Being a completionist, I was hoping to do the complete Burton-Schumacher quadrilogy myself at some point. Only, I would do a more thorough comparison between the fullscreen and widescreen versions and use widescreen shots where the fullscreen appears to be cropped from the widescreen.

I did already. It is mentioned earlier in this thread. The open mate for the most part is slightly cropped in the right and majorly cut on the left but with a lot of information added to the top and bottom. The sfx shots, including model and optical work, are all shot full frame unlike bttf.

Oh. But I must say, if I remember correctly, I noticed a closeup of the Batman himself in one of the earlier screenshot comparisons where it seemed the fullscreen was cropped at the left and right from the widescreen. IF I remember correctly.

The matte varies per shot and I posted that shot since it was the most cropped but it's still not worth replacing since it's not like a bttf or up situation.

Wow, the B&W regrade is such a great idea; it really does appear to amp up the film noir quotient, an element that I've always identified in Burtons take on the Caped Crusader. In addition, I think it may amplify that gothic, almost German expressionist vibe of those macabre cathedral scenes near the end.

Somewhat related, has anyone viewed Mad Max Fury Road: Black and Chrome edition? I know it was screened here in Toronto (at the Royal Cinema), and now is available for purchase on BD. Haven't viewed it yet, but looks like a worthwhile second (or my case 3rd) viewing.

Hey man, may I ask why it says cancelled?

If it was only the PCM sync, I might be able to help you out.

Yep that is about 75% the reason why. I have too many projects going on and the major bottleneck for me is syncing the soundtracks. In fact I have 3 project that are basically done except for the soundtrack sync.

It takes forever for me to sync a track since I'm super, super anal about it. So what was once fun is a bit of a chore. I just figured on getting rid of a few projects to lighten the load which included this and the predator upscale.

Batman was done except for the sync on the PCM so if you want to do the sync Tom, dragging this project over the finish line, I'll put it is the roster to finish (which shouldn't be much work since the 264 and 5.1 are done).

I synced the LD PCM to the BD years ago (that sync does not work with the DVD), just have to dig out a link for it. The PCM is like most LD soundtracks...it sounds pretty great.

Honestly, I didn't think anyone would notice or care. Smile
