I just got the brand new fan edit of
Alien 3 Legacy Cut yesterday and watched it today on a native 4K videoprojector on a 106" screen. So here are my thoughts:
- Video-wise, nice upscale, but the Blu-ray source being quite soft and the upscale being quite conservative, don't expect a sharp image. Color grading is satisfactory.
- Editing-wise, the inclusion of both the dog and the ox scenes make this edit rather reserved for those who already know both official cuts so that you wonder out of which animal the alien will get born. However we only see the live face-hugger in the dog scene, not the dead queenish one in the ox scene, which is kind of a bummer, I think, 'cause the presence of both would have been fitting for the dog being impregnated
and for Ripley being impregnated with a queen. Although its presence nearby the ox would still be a headscratcher.
- Visual effects-wise, the enhancement is very good for the most part. The compositing blends the alien way better in the frame with adjusted lighting and delineation on top of, I'm sure, adjusted texture, while retaining an old school look that doesn't look too new for 1992. However, I'm not too fond of the final shot of Ripley falling in the furnace. This one is clearly CGI and sticks out like a sore thumb, and here it is:
- POV-wise: the new look of the alien POV shots is quite good with the red and the light effects with that humming each time the alien passes one:
However it's been wrongfully added to the non-alien POV shots of its 1st victim nearby the big fan. Those shots are only the camera POV, not the alien's as there is no wide angle distorsion and the alien is not looking above yet. To me, that's clearly a mistake to consider it being the alien POV to apply that red vision here:
- Audio-wise: very good 5.1 mix. I selected the Dolby TrueHD track. The substitution in music score in the rape attempt scene is very well made. The one thing I wish was adjusted is that brief moment below, when we clearly see the warden moving his lips, but nothing comes out of it for a few syllables. I checked the official track and it's there as well, but I wish they could have made a video edit there, like showing Charles Dance for a second, to hide that mistake and cut back to the warden:
