What are you watching?
Watched Good Boys (2019) last night.

Very funny, everyone's great in it, especially the kids. Obviously it depends on your sense of humor, but I loved it.

Watched a Reddit edit of Johnny Mnemonic last night.
I will be reviewing that, not harshly, but boy there are problems.

I just got the brand new fan edit of Alien 3 Legacy Cut yesterday and watched it today on a native 4K videoprojector on a 106" screen. So here are my thoughts:

- Video-wise, nice upscale, but the Blu-ray source being quite soft and the upscale being quite conservative, don't expect a sharp image. Color grading is satisfactory.

- Editing-wise, the inclusion of both the dog and the ox scenes make this edit rather reserved for those who already know both official cuts so that you wonder out of which animal the alien will get born. However we only see the live face-hugger in the dog scene, not the dead queenish one in the ox scene, which is kind of a bummer, I think, 'cause the presence of both would have been fitting for the dog being impregnated and for Ripley being impregnated with a queen. Although its presence nearby the ox would still be a headscratcher.

- Visual effects-wise, the enhancement is very good for the most part. The compositing blends the alien way better in the frame with adjusted lighting and delineation on top of, I'm sure, adjusted texture, while retaining an old school look that doesn't look too new for 1992. However, I'm not too fond of the final shot of Ripley falling in the furnace. This one is clearly CGI and sticks out like a sore thumb, and here it is:

- POV-wise: the new look of the alien POV shots is quite good with the red and the light effects with that humming each time the alien passes one:

However it's been wrongfully added to the non-alien POV shots of its 1st victim nearby the big fan. Those shots are only the camera POV, not the alien's as there is no wide angle distorsion and the alien is not looking above yet. To me, that's clearly a mistake to consider it being the alien POV to apply that red vision here:

- Audio-wise: very good 5.1 mix. I selected the Dolby TrueHD track. The substitution in music score in the rape attempt scene is very well made. The one thing I wish was adjusted is that brief moment below, when we clearly see the warden moving his lips, but nothing comes out of it for a few syllables. I checked the official track and it's there as well, but I wish they could have made a video edit there, like showing Charles Dance for a second, to hide that mistake and cut back to the warden:

I'm probably going to watch that tonight as well, Alien 3 gets a lot of hate (as do most of them are the first two installments) however I think with time it's held up as one of the better entries, I'd probably put it above all of Ridey Scotts late releases and it's obviously better than Resurrection and I'm not even going to consider the Alien vs Predator films.

Finally, got to watch this also. I was excited to see it, given that I'm a big Alien 3 fan.

As a purist I don't like when SFX are changed in movies years later. Been vocal on that one. I don't feel the same way towards this project as it is basically a souped up fan edit. Having said that I thought the fixing of the rod puppet's composting looked good. That was the highlight of the project for me. That's not to say its perfect, because its not. For example, It still awkwardly moves (in most cases) like the original puppet. But to me, it looks closer to what the SFX guys probably wanted it to look like with better color matching throughout.

I thought the upscale and coloring were pretty good. The color timing did seem a little more "theatrical" looking to me. I didn't care for the red Alien vision, the new CGI sun, nor the furnace CGI at the end. Could of done without those but I understand why they did both.

The cut was fine. There is never going to be a perfect cut of Alien 3 so it is what it is. I liked that they dumped the egg. I also saw on their YT channel that they restored the "for the last time" line but didn't put it back in. I wish that they did. Kind of makes me want to finish my long gestating Workprint cut project which has that line.

All-in-all a good project. You can tell they put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this.

Today, I watched Tombstone on UHD. I had never seen it as I wasn't into westerns in my youth. It's a pretty darn good movie with a stacked cast, damn! Even the smaller parts were played by some actors who would become bigger names later on, either in movies (Michael Rooker, Stephen Lang, Billy Zane), or on TV (Jason Priestley, Terry O'Quinn). And suddenly, Charlton Heston appears, end the end credits reveals the opening and closing voice-over is Robert Mitchum? All that for a B-list director such as George Pan Cosmatos who apparently made a habit in his carreer to be the guy who gets the job after the original director gets fired. What the hell!
