For what it's worth, the European Blu-ray has lossless mono. Of course, it's entirely possible that the laserdisc sounds better, as is often the case.
By the way, I was looking at the extras listed on LDDB. Does anybody know what "censored scene" refers to?

There isn't a open-matte uncut version of Psycho in fan-edit form (or otherwise) that contains the original English soundtrack and English text on-screen.
Also, this thread is about the audio, please don't derail it too much.

Just to clear up the censored scene business: My understanding is that the extra footage was cut out of the negative prior to release, and it is an indisputable fact that no home video release has ever included it. It is only confirmed to exist on a print in Germany which has been transferred for TV airing there. Still frames appeared in Truffaut's Hitchcock book but I don't think it's ever been confirmed what print those stills actually came from.
I'd be shocked to find out that it was an extra on the Signature LD, I first read about it from DVD Savant in the 90s and he described it as if it had never been seen in motion ever. (This was before it showed up on German TV.) Just wanted to get that out there, so this can get back on track.

If possible, please provide links on how you came to understand what you wrote, otherwise... I do and don't care, however I really prefer the poster who started this just started a new thread to discuss the uncut version. It's one thing to mention the uncut version while mentioning the audio sources, it's another to just discuss the uncut version.

So judging from this article, the cut scene (not sure if just stills, or actual moving footage, or whether it has someone talking over it) does appear in the documentary that was created for the Signature LD, and has appeared on all subsequent DVD/BD releases. In terms of how it relates to the audio discussion: Since I assume it has no dialogue, I doubt it'd be very difficult to just take the German audio, slow it down, and drop it into another mix for purposes of syncing with a fan edit. |
