[In progress] Alien saga [Fundamental Collection]

Sporv, is that shot in the early HDTV versions? I think I have one on a hard drive somewhere. It corresponded to the first DVD release.

@Jetrell: are those tracks different from BD?

@Bigrob: the PAL LD (as the NTSC US LD boxset) used an interpositive print as master, so it is *supposed* to have the right color grading, which is closer to the THX LD anyway. Then, don't know if THX has refined it, or messed with it...

@Stamper: I should check. I could also post a comparison clip.

Which is what I used for my project partially based off your and mike's advice and partial based off the fact the ld was the video that best matched all the 35 mm samples I had. Not perfect but closest.

The ld is a negative scan. One of the first negative scans I can remember. They made a big deal about that on the ld jacket. It was then color corrected to match some prints.

About Aliens, we got the following color variations:
  • Original negative - no color timing
  • THX NTSC LD - master from negative, regraded to release print
  • PDB - BD regraded (partially) to THX NTSC LD
  • Interpositive - *should* contain all color timing found in the release prints
  • PAL UK LD / NTSC LD boxset - master from interpositive
  • Fundamental Collection - BD regraded to PAL UK / NTSC LD
  • Blu-ray - master from negative, regraded to... ?!?
Still can't claim which is the closest to the theatrical colors; following the fact Alien PAL LD *seems* closer to film print than other versions, I *may suppose* Aliens PAL LD (and NTSC LD boxset, which used the same master, from an interpositive) colors are closest to a film print than other version...

What I can say for sure is that the BD is a green mess; everything was tinted to green, while on LD (both) there are a lot of blue, teal, magenta, grey etc.

Another difference is that PDB, you have chosen to restore the original "faults" (window in the lab, Bishop hole) while I have left the fixed ones found on BD; plus, I would reinstate that short shot (3s) that is different on LD. (top LD, bottom BD - link)

Looks pretty rad! How do the FC versions compare to the THX LaserDiscs?

Aliens: there are many scenes with pretty much the same colors, while others are different - usually not that much...
Alien: difference are more prominent here
Alien 3: no THX LDs in my possession - there is a Japanese one IIRC; difference from US and UK are minimal
Alien: Resurrection: THX AC3 and DTS, when corrected, are the same.

They are all a pleasure to watch, with those warm, strong colors!

Has someone else noted Ripley's "bra" before?  Big Grin

Another thing I did notice as well during the 70mm screening was the panning shot of the Dropship in the Sulaco before they get their 'bug hunt' orders. The BD version fixes the matte painting as it pans across because on print it wobbles a bit. The BD version is seamless. Also worth mentioning the goofs they fixed with Bishop's torn torso, when he grabs newt from being sucked out the airlock, you can see his body under the torso make up. That digitally fixed for the BD. Also they change the order of sequence when Ripley straps the guns together. Might want to note that particular change if you're using the BD for the Video aspect of your release. Look forward to seeing this release though!

Didn't realise there was a second page to this thread lol

For my TV cut I fix the Bishop goof and the windows scratches:

I didn't fix the gun order since its fixed in the TV cut. That's right Cameron fixed it in the TV cut first, apparently it bothers him a lot Smile

I have no clue. They are exclusive to the Japanese release tho.
