Hey Evit, it's Catoblepa - I'm the Alien fanatic who remembered a dubbed Hudson voice that was cut from all THX releases (his famous howl after the line "express elevator to hell, going down"). I think I've sent you a stereo audio rip of that VHS, if I remember correctly. Wink

Always happy to find Alien fanatics. Yes, I remember an audio clip, meanwhile I also found a VHS tape of the film... I think. I'm kinda buried under literal mountains of tapes. Anyway, sorry for derailing spoRv's thread.
AKA thxita on OriginalTrilogy
I preserve movies as they first appeared in Italy.

IIRC I have taken that small audio clip with the intention to add it to the Italian track - or maybe I could even made it and literlly forgot about... Eek

By the way: welcome aboard - benvenuto a bordo! Ok

Grazie spoRv! Well, at first I didn't even know you were italian, and now I find out you've even downloaded my Aliens audio clip... it's a small world, isn't it? Nice to know even a noob like me can contribute to the great cause of movie restoration  Big Grin

Speakin' of Aliens, besides the infamous Hudson howl, I've noticed some strange SFX mixing differences that seem to be unique to the italian track. A good example can be found in the combat drop sequence, precisely here (0:37):

https://youtu.be/8vESxCZe0HA?t=38

In the english 5.1 track, when the airlock opens, it doesn't do much noise, as you can hear in the clip above. In the italian 5.1 track, the airlock makes a deafening sound (and a very different one, to boot), like air sucked out into space. Sorry for the horrible quality, it's distorted and accelerated but it's the only italian clip I've found on youtube. (33:54)

https://youtu.be/HmgjAVcNBpQ?t=2034

Just to be clear, I've tested both tracks on a 5.1 home theater and the differences are still there, just like you hear 'em in those clips. It's a completely different mix that creates a different narrative - and I'm sure other examples can be found in other parts of the movie, I just don't remember exactly where right now. The sound was already there in the first THX edition, in VHS format.

Sorry for the off-topic, but I'm very interested in your opinion!

Would be nice to find out a complete Italian track, and see if there are other differences.

By the way, I had also Alien 3 part at the beginning, where the computer talks - I was 100% sure it was there also in the Italian track, like in the other ones, but not available on DVD nor BD - but I found it on VHS! I always plan to insert it in a future revision, but I'm so lazy... Happy

Who knows... maybe I'll investigate more when I have time (could make for an interesting video comparison) Wink I admit I'm quite lazy myself.

Didn't know about that Alien 3 difference! I've seen the movie in the theater when I was twelve (a very depressing memory of my adolescence... Hicks dies in the title sequence? They open Newt like a Christmas turkey? Bishop is junk and begs to be terminated?), but I have no recollection of a talking computer. Some guys have superhuman memory, they can even remember the exact point of reel changes - I only remember that sometimes the audio went silent for a couple of seconds, but back then I didn't know the reason and didn't care at all... same about original 35mm color timing. I have good photographic memory but I just wasn't paying attention to something like that!

There is some funny stuff in the dubs. For example, in Terminator, in the Japan dub, they dubbed all the shrieks of Sarah as Reese explains his mission and ID on the run in the car, and it's hilarious the noise she makes.

I have this idea of cut & pasting the english dub with the Sarah shrieks taken from the JP dub, just to make for a funny parody sequence.

Lucius Etruscus... is that you? Big Grin Strange thing to meet again here, I remember well our exchange about that Hudson clip (and your article)!
Thanks for the link, fascinating read (I don't know if I love Alien 3 enough to put back the computer voice in the 5.1 track, but it's still great to find something like that and preserve it).

I'm gonna check the japanese dub, now I'm very curious! It's always fun to listen to foreign dubs, in some way they tell you how a character is perceived in a different culture (what's a "hero" voice for a japanese moviegoer? Maybe the criminals roll the R, like you hear in yakuza movies?).
