[Released] Harry Potter saga - open matte
#41
Sorry, my computer is still set up at my parents' house, and I haven't made it there in a couple days. I'm waiting to give an opinion until I see it on a better screen than my phone.

My suggestion is work on them in order, since the first two seem to be easiest with the most complete sources.

I posted how to fix #1, but #2 Is in need of attention to figure out why it won't ivtc correctly.

I think it looks slightly better than the source, it's so smeary I can't believe it's actually HD.

Can the BD be used to enhance detail of the center area (unless the matting wasn't done evenly for all shots)? 7 and 8 had pretty good encodes (after the first 6 were done in low bitrate VC1).

@nightstalkerpoet: I'll wait, but you know your mission, right? Wink

@nirbateman: I'm not sure if the open matte is always perfectly centered, I still have to make direct comparison between the HDTV and BD; but, even if it is (and I'm quite sure it will be not, at least not for all the shots), using the BD would improve the center quality, but what's about the top and bottom? You will get an uneven picture, that, in my opinion, could be quite distracting, apart maybe during dark shots - and then lower HDTV resolution would be masked somehow by the low lights...

So, even if technically it *may* be possible, I'm not leaning towards this solution - not always for the uneven quality, but also for the huge amount of shot changes between open matte/cropped, multiplied per eight movies!

Unless you would like to write down all the shot frame numbers... Big Grin

Jokes apart, when watched at the proper distance, HDTV quality, even untouched, is really good; and it's surprising how bad is it when watched zoomed in...

I know my mission Wink

For Film 2,
Code:
LoadPlugin("C:\Users\night\Desktop\dgdecnv\DGDecodeNV.dll")
orig=DGSource("E:\hp2.dgi", FieldOP=0)
a=SeparateFields(orig)
SelectEvery(a,5,0,1,3,4)
Weave()
AssumeFPS("ntsc_film")
b=Trim(0,61902)
c=Trim(orig,77379,277631).AssumeFPS("ntsc_film")
b++c

Sorts out the film up until Frame 61903 where there are errors in the video in the shot (the start of clip c in the script). They are potentially fixable - Getting as many clear frames from the sequence, then running just those frames through a QTGMC(lossless=2,sourcematch=3) should give a set of motion compensated frames that could fill in alright. However, following that there are a few color alignment issues that I'm unsure how to work with.

Preliminary tests are looking good btw.

Edit: Running #2 through mpeg2repair to see if it helps. I'll let you know.

Edit 2: mpeg2repair didn't seem to fix it

Thanks for the script!

I noted the glitches; I think they are quite hard to correct, and also a frame is missing... luckily they are in a short 4s shot, so I have replaced it with the cropped BD - it has a slight different framing position, and I squeezed the frame to be similar to the HDTV, but it works as well Wink

Left untouched, right replaced:

Looks good to me. After that, the rest of the film should IVTC nicely.

Can you do a 1fps comparison of before and after?

Also, this may be strange, but I have an odd request. I always liked the title "Sorcerer's Stone" better, but know that in history the name of the stone was Philosopher's Stone.

Would you be willing to change the title to Sorcerer's Stone using the US BD (the stone belongs to a Sorceror, and it sounds more magical), but keep the "Philosopher's Stone" parts for the rest of the film.

Frankly, I thought to replace the opening and final credits to get the "Philospher's Stone"; that's the original book title, and "Sorcerer's Stone" was used only in the US.

Fair enough. I didn't/don't have the file in front of me to check which version it is.

There are multiple shots that will have to be replaced if the HDTV stream is based on the US version and you'd like to switch to Philosopher's Stone
-Hermione reading about it out loud
-In the forest with the centaur
-At Hagrids front door
-Talking to Professor McGonagall

Also, thanks for posting, that does look better. Smile
