OK but nonetheless I saw in Europe in wider ratio. It's sure the Theatrical ratio is 1.85, but like Top Gun, other exhibition ratios existed. Those different transfers are witness of this, probably taken from prints.
Agree those scope trailers were probably for that purpose. There is a scope trailer for Dirty Harry 5 too, even though the film is 1.85.

I just need to find the PAL SE disc, will go shopping this week.
I did a rough compare, try to guess what happens when you take the top and bottom of the blu-ray, and add the sides to the DVD... You end up exactly at a 2.1 ratio! It looks actually more like 2.20:1
So all I would have to do is recrop the DVD to 2.1 or 2.20 and adjust the top where it looks weird, or when a boom mike appears. Which I'm sure is not a lot of places. I suppose all the 2.1 VHS and LDs have the same extend on the sides.

That was probably because of Projectionist error, like mentioned earlier in the thread.
It is weird seeing it wider, as my understanding is in Europe the screens we're slightly taller and Matted to that (1:66:1 I believe). I don't ever remember coming across a 2.1.1 screen (is this the ratio Jurassic World and House of Cards are in?) or was it matted to 2:35:1.
Top Gun sounds like they screwed up with the cropping on the various Home Video Masters. The exhibition prints we're 'scope' as zoidberg pointed out earlier in the thread. I doubt multiple 35mm exhibition ratios existed.

I give up.
Good luck with your project bud.

What about the transfers which are 2.1? Nope, I think the formats varied depending the showings. You know there way more and anything that is on the internet regarding info about films. That's why guess and detective work and debate is good

Still think the best solution would be the "patched" version open matte, with soft matte option via subtitle hack, so everybody would be happy!

Have you actually read my posts?
It's pretty clear why I think there are 2.1 'transfers'.
It's hard to have varied formats from a 'scope' print depending on showings as it's pretty fixed.
Guess, detective work and debate are all good if the results are actually paid attention to.

I'm happy with what I have really, the 2002 DVD and the Bluray, but there are those out there that would probably show interest in this.

Yes totally read those, nonetheless I stand by having viewed the film in wider format on release week in France, and the Pal SE DVD looks like the only way I can recreate that format experience. Those movies shots flat before Super 35 set in all have formats problems, with people complaining about boom mikes on widescreen transfers et al. So something funky was definetely going on behind the scenes at the time. The Crow is similar with a different wider japanese transfer, The Punisher still have boom mikes on all transfers, I also read Batman, Batman Returns and Edward Scissorhands had problems etc.
