[No Longer Available] Die Hard With A Vengeance Regrade (35 Project #2)
#31
OK, so my first impression last night when I was going through it, a scene here, a scene there, was that it was too bland. Then today, I watched it entirely on my "quasi calibrated" OLED TV set to neutral color temperature (neither cold nor warm), and I must say that overall, once your eyes adjust to the "bland" look of it, it's a real improvement on the Blu-ray. Now there is still room for improvement.

These shots and their twins will need a manual adjustment to look like their environment shots. There's too much yellow in it. However, and that's a spoiler for my conclusion, I think the whole movie needs to shift a bit towards gold/yellow. Nevertheless, these shots, as is, don't look the same as the rest of the scene:

This is the direct next scene in the stairs at the precinct. McClane's side looks too bland, and on the other side, Zeus' face has too much green in it:

[Image: 473420DieHardWithAVengeancetestmp4snapsh...143308.jpg]

In the very next scene, on their way to the payphone, I don't really like the green on the yellow cab that is also present in the Gray's Papaya store logo. I feel that the yellow should be more like the yellow cab they'll end up "carjacking" on their way to Central Park.

These blues could use some more cyan, and the Cinergi logo at the beginning also:

[Image: 990733DieHardWithAVengeancetestmp4snapsh...143634.jpg]

Oddly, McClane is very red here, and I understand that he makes a physical effort, but on the next shot he's no longer that red:

[Image: 759396DieHardWithAVengeancetestmp4snapsh...143601.jpg]

And finally, there's this whole scene... Only I don't know which way to go to make it look better, 'cause to me this looks really weird.

[Image: 382467DieHardWithAVengeancetestmp4snapsh...143642.jpg]

[Image: 402648DieHardWithAVengeancetestmp4snapsh...143659.jpg]

So I tried to tweak the setting on my TV screen to see what I could improve, and I still believe that the whole color timing needs a golden/yellow push. The blues will shift to the green side and turn into a sort of cyan, some remaining pinkish tones will be a bit muted, and it could use a more brownish golden tone like Independence Day, see here on Goldblum's face: https://fanrestore.com/thread-968-post-3...l#pid35994
The whole thing might need a push in saturation, too. My usual setting is 47% saturation on my TV. I tested going up to 60 and even 65%, and it didn't look too bad when combined with a more warm color temperature that emulates the golden/yellow push I was searching.

I can add the yellow you advised and punch the saturation. I was trying to keep it from getting too green to be frank. I'll try that tonight and see how it goes.

As for the shots changing like that. That's just the BD. I mentioned it a few entries ago that both DH3 and DH2 change wildly shot to shot even before the regrade. Like the on the rope:

he's just blistering red in the original BD. Problem is I can do several LUTs for the movie scene-by-scene but can't do it shot-by-shot without a visual guide to pull from.

Or maybe I should rethink this and come at this from a different direction...

Oh, I'm sure it's like this on the Blu-ray. The same goes at the precinct when Zeus doesn't want to go with McClane, and McClane asking Charlie where the warning bomb was found. I noticed that weirdness on the actual Blu-ray.

Try to emulate the Independence Day look, maybe in the precinct, to see if you can get the same skintones on McClane as the one on Goldblum's face. Maybe you can try that too in the fountain scene as there are some green trees around just like the chess scene in ID4.

Hmmm ok.

Then let's scratch this work for now. I just got the 35mm trailer for DH3 that I have been watching for months. I figured WTH at this point. So I'll rebuild this using the trailer the same way I did DH2.

I can use the time to finish syncing DH2's soundtrack.

Oh, interesting. I'm curious to see what that trailer looks like.

If I had to guess probably the same as what you saw but maybe minus some of the green or more blue depending on the film stock.

But even using the trailer won't necessarily fix those on consistent shots. Sadly 35mm projection smooths a lot of that over.

OK got two trailers on the way. Let's see what they look like.

Ok got the first trailer and scanning it now. This is US trailer C or number 3. Sadly not scope but flat. I'm going to wait to see what shows up with the second trailer (which version and the colors) before I draw any conclusions:

Since I'm waiting for the materials, I'm going to put this as number 3 in the series, now after Temple Of Doom.

Yep, let's wait for the second one, 'cause this is... odd.
