OK, so my first impression last night when I was going through it, a scene here, a scene there, was that it was too bland. Then today, I watched it entirely on my "quasi calibrated" OLED TV set to neutral color temperature (neither cold nor warm), and I must say that overall, once your eyes adjust to the "bland" look of it, it's a real improvement on the Blu-ray. Now there is still room for improvement.
These shots and their twins will need a manual adjustment to look like their environment shots. There's too much yellow in it. However, and that's a spoiler for my conclusion, I think the whole movie needs to shift a bit towards gold/yellow. Nevertheless, these shots, as is, don't look the same as the rest of the scene:
This is the direct next scene in the stairs at the precinct. McClane's side looks too bland, and on the other side, Zeus' face has too much green in it:
In the very next scene, on their way to the payphone, I don't really like the green on the yellow cab that is also present in the Gray's Papaya store logo. I feel that the yellow should be more like the yellow cab they'll end up "carjacking" on their way to Central Park.
These blues could use some more cyan, and the Cinergi logo at the beginning also:
Oddly, McClane is very red here, and I understand that he makes a physical effort, but on the next shot he's no longer that red:
And finally, there's this whole scene... Only I don't know which way to go to make it look better, 'cause to me this looks really weird.
So I tried to tweak the setting on my TV screen to see what I could improve, and I still believe that the whole color timing needs a golden/yellow push. The blues will shift to the green side and turn into a sort of cyan, some remaining pinkish tones will be a bit muted, and it could use a more brownish golden tone like Independence Day, see here on Goldblum's face: https://fanrestore.com/thread-968-post-3...l#pid35994
The whole thing might need a push in saturation, too. My usual setting is 47% saturation on my TV. I tested going up to 60 and even 65%, and it didn't look too bad when combined with a more warm color temperature that emulates the golden/yellow push I was searching.
