[Proposal] Superman (1978) - theatrical cut reconstruction based on Extended Cut BD
#11
I have both Jonno's and Buster's capped LD's for this future project.

The color on the Extended Cut is odd.  At times, it looks good, but other shots look off.

Apart from Superman's teal suit, the theatrical cut doesn't look too bad.  On balance, though, I think that the Special Edition looks best in terms of color.  At one point, I was trying to conform that to the theatrical, but I discovered that there are alternate takes.  I might be able to work round that now though.

EDIT: At this point, I don't think it's worth using the Extended Cut as the basis for a reconstruction of the theatrical, because it would require extensive color correction.

Personally, I just love a good challenge.

^ As do I, but the premise of the thread is that the new BD is possibly the best-looking version so far and therefore might be worth using as a source, and I'm not convinced of that yet.

I thought the bluray included the original mono audio. Didn't it?

^ It depends what you mean by "original mono". According to the captain, the BD 2.0 is the Dolby Stereo, but it lacks the mono-to-stereo opening and the matrixed sound-field, and the LD audio sounds better.

EDIT:  On a separate note, here are some more screenshots.

I think the suit definitely looks better in the extended, but the colours from the daily planet image look better in the theatrical in my opinion.

Hmmmmmm... I'm torn, but I think I prefer the colors of the extended edition.

I'm not sure that I like either. The suit just seems to go from teal in the theatrical cut to almost purple in the extended (maybe it's just that scene). Also the lights on the helipad seem to have a weird pink tone in the extended.

^Agreed! In the TC, the suit is a consistent teal color throughout.  In the EC, it varies quite a bit, from a pleasing blue to something bordering on the teal of the TC . This is what's odd about the EC: it's as if there are parts of the film that the studio forgot to mess up.  In the shot below, I like the color of the suit more in the EC, but the background looks better in the TC.
