Just a quick question. Is the HD DVD/Blu Ray essentially the CDS but with a filter at 16kHz?
If that is true, it may actually be an improvement or at least a good alternate version. Not closer to the original I guess, but getting rid of the 16 kHz hum/fizz/whateveryoucallit is hardly a bad thing ... although the approach taken is not exactly subtle.
After all, the reason the CDS is considered good here is that it's the original mix and not a remix. If the HD DVD / Blu Ray isn't a remix and merely has this technical fix in it, I don't think it's necessarily a big issue.
Also consider that this "frequency hole" may look a bit exaggerated due to the linear frequency diagram created. Though, the octaves in higher frequencies are spread across a wider frequency range so it's arguable that not much is lost "audibly" while the noises are gone.
